I'm starting to think maybe I'm missing something. I put an item up for auction, people keep sending me convos and mails with offers...
Huh?
Is there some scam or something that is possible with auctions? Are these people counting on my auction going unbid on? Don't quite get what these people are thinking... What's the deal?
It's An Auction.
Bid on it maybe??
Can anyone shed some light on this? It's making my wee brain cramp up due to logic depravation.

I haven't messed with auctions yet, but is there no ability to set a buy-out price? Sounds like a feature that would be handy (pretty basic eBay thing).

There is
And to the OP: yes and yes There are certain scams where people try to make you setup a private auction just for them to "save on taxes" And yes, they give you an offer that you would consider if noone bids

Most likely they're trying to scam you into setting up a private auction to "avoid taxes" (of which there are none on contracts, other than a fixed fee). They'll tell you to set the minimum bid to something like 1 isk with a buyout at the price you agree on. They then bid the minimum and take your stuff.

That one I could understand but I thought once you put an auction up you couldn't cancel it..? So nagging the seller isn't going to move the clock any faster.

Yep, there's buyout functionality. I always set mine for the rich and impatient.

Auctions can be cancelled if noone have made a bid yet. ----------------------- I wanted this cool quote, but it was too long and now you have to settle with this sad signature. |

Ah ok. Makes a little more sense then. Guess I'll have to update my bio.

Got the same thing. A two day character ask me "Hey i want your item now for [my buyout - 20%]."
I open the contract and see : Item needed : my item Cost : my buyout - 20%
He wanted both my item + my isk.

Sometimes if I see an Auction that is nearly over and no one has bid on it (and at a price I am not willing to pay) I'll mail the person and see if they want to make a deal. No scam...just a business proposal. Some are happy to unload it, others would rather let it sit on auction over and over. To each their own.

Maybe you should enter: 'Scammers don't bother. I'm no idiot !' in the description field next time, if it fits. Maybe they stop sending you mails. ___________ Muuuhhh !!! |

I could understand that but I haven't had any problems with stuff selling. I think as others have said, what I'm experiencing is people either not wanting to wait or not wanting to pay. /shrug

that wasn't kuckaa by any chance? i get mails&WTB-scams from him/her on every item exchange i set up in rens (no - i didnt fall for it)
although i believe in people being smart, this red font is really confusing and outclasses the old x1 trick quite a bit. no whine but... change? i mean... the want to _buy_ is simply inappropriate if the money goes in the wrong direction :o

I dont get it with "Private auctions". Now i freely admit that i haven't tried this yet but...
If someone wants to buy an item for, lets say, 1,000,000 isk in an auction and wants it to be private - so only they can bid on it. Now this is where most scams happen.
Instead of making the starting bid 1 isk why can't you just make it 999,999 isk. Then make the auction last for 1 day only.
This way if the person tries to "scam" you, you only loose 1 isk.
Or can you not set a starting bid? (which seems a bit silly)

I had a run in with kuckaa yesterday wanting to buy out one of my items for a couple million less on a sell contract not an auction. It cost as much to set up the seperate contract then to buy what i had to sell.
Remember look at the contract carefully If both items and isk are red. they are wanting to take your money and the item.
I told the guy he was an idiot and moved on.

The scammer plays on the seller's greed. When making a public auction, the seller gets taxed on his minimum bid. When selling faction items worth many hundred millions, this tax can be quite significant.
The scammer suggests to make an auction, but keep the starting bid as 1isk/10isk/100isk, promising to pay the full amount on a bid, and luring the seller with the "great deal" of no tax. What people don't realise is that there is no tax for private contracts of any type to begin with.
Another spin of this is saying that the buyer has to pay tax, and to avoid it, he would like a private auction, and then the same story follows.

Is that the same place to set the cspa charges for a private conversation?

I suppose that would work if you never, ever, get invited into a gang. Otherwise you would have one very irritated gang leader.

Barring the scammers I think that is spot on. Most people want instant gratification. If you are looking about for mods/ships you generally want them now and not later. Tossing a few hundred mil (or whatever) at an auction and waiting 3 days kinda sucks not to mention worrying about some other peep laying in a bid 1 minute before auction end and you have to start all over. Don't get me wrong...I understand the idea of the auction and have no issue with it and think it is a great addition in EVE but nevertheless it suffers from the wait times.
And of course people do want deals. Most auctions IRL start with an attractive offer that would be considered a good buy and then hope the bidders keep going higher. That's why I find my approach to asking people whose auctions have not sold if they want to negotiate a lower price (in my case I am not playing the market...I want to actually use whatever it is and not resell it). I generally have a good idea of the worth of an item and look to find a slightly better deal. The seller can hold out for more or take the lower offer for immediate money. No better or worse to it as both have advantages/drawbacks to consider.
