I wonder how many characters are created with a gender different from thier creator? Are there many ladys out there playin a male character and visa versa guys playing a female character? When you log in would you rather look an attractive member of the opposite gender or do you create a warrior type as an extension of yourself?
Forgive me, my mind wanders down strange paths from time to time

Edited by: Humpalot on 05/04/2007 04:29:53 I think it is a safe bet that males comprise the majority of the playerbase in EVE. Of them a fair number choose female avatars for whatever reason.
That said there are a surprising number of women (actual females) who play EVE and I know a few of them make male avatars.
It's so common these days in online games not sure there is even much point in sorting out why. People do it cuz it suited them at the moment. Used to be as a female avatar in a male dominated game you could garner sympathy and help more easily but I think that went away long ago.

Wasnt really looking for an explanation as such, was just curious, and yes I know a couple of genuine females, one that plays a male character, and one that doesnt, no real reason. Just thought I would pose the query

I read somewhere that like only 3% of the female avatars are actually played by girls. I was much happier before I knew that fact *sigh*
That being said, I do have a female nubile slave alt I keep locked in my hanger to do my reprocessing for me (hey I never said I dont have issues)

they do say
mmorpg = Many Men Online Role Playing Girls
the thing is in any game as soon as someone is mentioned as being a girl, they get hassled, people always in disbelief that it was a "girl" that just kicked their ass.
i play call of duty 2 under the name of rocketqueen , not because i wanna be a girl, but because i like the song by that name, yet any server i log onto thats relatively quiet = less than 5 people , someone always asks "are you a girl" and then proceed to try to chat me up, and its like dude i am a guy, so just eat these bullets of mine and shut the funk up Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo Etoophie ([email protected])

According to the in EVE website which generates stats from currently around 18,000 submitted Character sheets 23% of Eve avatars are female. This is high for MMORPGs, and is possibly a result of the players being older than average.
Crossgender play is a Frequently Raised Subject on RPG forums. A majority of players pick avatars of their own sex because it doesn't occur to them to do otherwise, a significant minority sometimes cross gender, and a small minority think crossing gender is weird or perverted. Yes, some female players pick male avatars to avoid harassment from immature male players, and conversely some male players pick female avatars to take advantage of this.

A friend of mine made a female character in WoW, and proceeded to flirt outrageously with males in game - much to the embarrassment of those of us who knew him in RL. He made it clear to us that if anyone outed him ingame he would be Very Upset. I think someone did anyway, and not a moment too soon I reckon. *shudder*
I played a female halfling in DDO once, but that game has voice-comms and I am a bloke with a deep voice. I might have freaked out a stranger or two, but I wasn't fooling anybody.
It matters not in EvE whether your character is male or female really, as all you are is a face on the screen (maybe until voice-comms become widespread ). It's all the emotes that made WoW so freakish.

yeah I'd like to have a good reason but that pretty much sums up my thinking at the time. Although in retrospect it was probably a good choice being a noobi, people tend to be more friendly. |

I'm a male that always plays female personas ever since my first MUD back in '93. It's a predilection of mine.
I don't play on-line games to pull/meet members of the opposite sex - that is the raison d'etre of bars, clubs and Match.com. That said, I've met quite a few genuine females and one of my MMORPG playing friends is female.
The male/female split in MMORPGs is a common question, but doesn't interest me beyond an interest in demographics. Like I say, if I wish to hook up with someone, bars and clubs serve that purpose - although I've never met anyone in a bar or club that has lasted beyond the evening.
Male? Female? Irrelevant. It's one's character (or lack, thereof) that is the fundamental determinant.
Remember: no matter how beautiful she may be, someone, somewhere, is sick of her s**t.
Regards, Liscia Thierese

23% female ? If so well it's not really that high. Go to ffxi or lineage II and you'll get far more female ----

For the most part, people playing as the opposite-sex in a game is to be expected in a MMORPG. I don't have any problems with this, since I myself am I guy who plays as a woman (which doesn't bother me one bit either.) I also agree with the current thought that the average player would, "much rather look at a pretty girl than a dude."
