Edited by: Kaeten on 07/04/2007 12:27:07 Yes another topic by me. Now as some of yous may know I'm half scottish half swedish.
I hate beer. Cider is annoying. Vodka works. Tequila is nice. And whiskey is thumbs up. Now I'm only 19 so I don't have cash to spend.
What SCOTTISH whiskey do yous prefer AND WHY. Right now I got myself a Laphroaig Single Malt 10 years 40%, tastes very fine.
Anyone else got anything they want ot share?

Good choice on the Laphroaig.
My top three would be:
- Laphroaig (15yr) - Lagavulin (16yr) - Oban (14yr) ------

Cask strength Caol Isla, with a little bit of water to bring out the oils. it's a lot less peaty than the other islay malts, but instead has more iodine from being on the coast.
fantastic malt.

I haven't filled my pedantry quota for today so ...
there is no Scottish whiskey, only Scottish whisky
Laphroaig is really nice. I like Talisker too - its got a much fuller, heavier taste than most whiskies because of the peat on Skye. Makes it more of an aquired taste but it's worth aquiring imo. If I'm on a budget I go for Glenmorangie, though I admit that has less to do with it's quality as a whisky and more to do with Connor Macleod drinking it in Highlander . Would go for an 18 or 25 year old over the 10 though.
If you want to try whiskey instead you can't go far wrong with Bushmills. If you don't mind blends you won't find better than Black Bush (it's better than a lot of malts even, I think). But a 21 year Bushmills single malt makes for a very a nice dram too

We don't make Whiskey here in Scotland
Talisker and Laphroaig are the ones that are easiest to find in the pubs (if you discount stuff like Famous Grouse and Bells!)
Ardbeg if you can get it. |

As above: Whisky = Scottish, Whiskey = Irish.
I love the Islay whiskys the most,
Top 3 I've drunk: Port Ellen 21yo. Bowmore 25yo. Talisker cask strenght 18yo. (Not from Islay but Skye - visited the distillery)
I also enjoy Highland Park. Coal Ila & Laphroaig I like both, I prefer Coal Ila... Damn I want some now....

Glenmorangie.
I have a liter of it sitting at home right now, and I have to say it is the best single malt scotch I've had so far, but only being 25 and a student, my adventures with scotch is only just starting, but still, it's yummy.
Also, get me on TS after a night of drinking sctoch, I tend to Leroy fleets into camps quite a lot. ------------------

Talisker - As someone else stated, takes some getting used to, but can't beat the heavier taste
Dalwhinnie - Pretty light, and was told to us in the Oban tour that it's considered "Ladies Scotch Whisky" but I actually rather enjoy it.
Grouse - Never heard of it, but won some in a carnival in Balleter. So, thinking it was normal Scotch whisky, went back to the Craigendarroch, poured myself one, took a big swig promptly almost blew out my eyeballs. Got used to it by the end of my trip, so not too bad now.
Oban - This stuff is selling for Gold prices in Canada. However, never been able to get over the peatiness.
Try them all. Like wine, beer and all the other alcohols, each one is unique and has their own experience to an individual's palate.

Ah a topic I can finally give the world my opinion on my favourite tipple
Oban 14yr old - not bad, good for a night in at the pub Edradour - Not a well known brand but is made near my home town, nice flavour, even more so with a hint of water! Bruichladdich - the 10yr old rocked, the 15yr old I own and the 20yr old iirc is a relic! Cardhu - its drinkable.. when drunk Glenmorangie - quite drinkable Glenfiddich - who can i hit? Ardbeg - Smoke in a glass, take this and feel the smoke rise [not for the faint hearted] Laphroig - Not as strong as ardbeg, very peaty though! Grouse - its a blend.. you shouldnt be drinking it Bells - another blend Johnnie walker - yet another blend Bowmore - peaty, nice pallate, works really well as a mixer with coke
I probably have tried more, I used to work as a supervisor in a whisky store, tasting was mandatory training as was just drinking the stuff to "sample" the products! --------------------------------

In my opinion the Islay and Orkney whiskies are the best. Laphroig and Highland Park are porbably the best from each island. Age doesn't matter as much with whisky compared to wine. It adds more to the rarety value than anything else. Whisky should never be drunk with ice. Some people will say that a few drops of water should be added. Something to do with releaseing the aroma. I really don't know that much about it and I think it is probably for the affectionados only.

Well with bowmore there are differnt types, now depending on the colour of the flask/labeling will depend on the type:
Greeny blue - the standard bottle aged at 12 years dark greeny blue - 17 year old Red one - cherry casked, taste quite similar to wine, typically 12 year old iirc
There are 2 others, cant remember exactly what they are, but i imagine the one you bought was the 12 year old
EDIT:
A link the what could be described as the best whisky available :D --------------------------------

I can't believe no one has mentioned Glenlivet or the Macallan.
Personally prefer the sweeter taste of Glenmorangie to anything with iodine in it.
Johnnie Walker Black label is not just another blend. It is actually better (to my tastebuds) than some malts.
