Why the missile launcher, torpedo launcher etc. are not visible like turrets?
Because in market you see and on your ship you see nothing and can not beleave that the missiles etc. came from the center off the ship that looks not "realistic".

Well you can see them on the drake :)
They come out of small hatches underneeth and on top of your ship but the hatches close extremly quickly so that no ship can get past your armor:)

Edited by: Squiddus on 08/04/2007 20:16:51 Yes on the drake you see them but what is with the rokh? When you fitt a Siege launcher on it you dont see them. And on the drake the rockets etc. are not coming from the launcher (the rokh is only an example)

You see them on the Drake because I believe they are part of the model. I'll have to look at one with no missile bays fitted, but I believe that the model is done with what looks like 8 laucher bays, for a possible future capability of 8 launchers. |

its part of the model. Like the crow wich has 2 launcher slots on it but most people fit 3.

"Realistic" would mean burying your missile launchers under thick armor plate, opening only to fire, for the very simple reason that you've got a rack of highly explosive missiles with a link to another few thousand missiles in your cargohold, having them on the outside where they can get hit, sympathically detonate and blow the insides out of your ship. Just like real life, if something explodes, you don't have it strapped to the outside of your ship.

It's really quite simple.
CCP forgot them at first, and have ignored them ever since. If you are looking for some life-affirming moment of revelation here, you are going to be disappointed. Sorry. ---

O RLY? But it's fine to have a large hybrid turret stuffed full of ANTIMATTER on your ship?
Nice try, but I refer you to my answer above... ---

Than the missiles have a very small shoot radius and so you must bring your ship in an "fire postion" to fire rokets and that is quite impossible with an BS against an Interceptor.

Then why is it RL battleships have their massive artillery cannons OUTSIDE the ship while they have their Cruise launchers BURIED in the ship?
The cannons pull a load from inside the ship, load it into the barrel at the turret section, then fire it. The whole system is designed so that if the cannon took several direct hits (Or a round cooks off in the chamber) the explosion doesn't reach down into the ship and ignite the magazine. There.

Then you'd have to limit the turrets so they can only hit what they'd can rotate to, besides, if I fire a cruise missile it has more than sufficient manuverability to steer itself in any direction it is needed.

Edited by: Aron Palatine on 09/04/2007 22:14:20 I think it might worth mentioning that I read in my EVE-O mag a couple issues back that with the new models and graphics update that is in production, CCP is adding more high slot module representation, specifically, missile launchers.
So, in short, Missile Launchers will be see on your ship when they do the new graphics engine update.
You're welcome.

Uhm, perhaps because missiles are guided and don't need a barrel? Just guessing, of course..
I really hope CCP also improves the turret models and textures. Would be great if they'd look like they do on the icons. Right now turrets, especially the small ones, with the exception of 125 and 150mm rails perhaps, look crappy.

It was a Rhetorical question.

Well, it wasn't a serious answer either. Although I don't think it was a rhetorical question. Since those don't need an explanation afterwards.
Anyway.. busted RL analogy. _________________________________ - The sky is the sky wherever you go - |

Okay...
Currently there is no missile launcher that can be seen on your ship the same way that turrets can be seen. Missiles simply "appear" from the center of your ship (which is lame). However, this will, hopefully, be fixed with the graphics update that is coming
As for the real life debate:
Currently naval vessels that have gun turrets have an auto-loading mechanism that loads each shot into the gun from a dedicated magazine deep in the ship. The reason why the turret can be exposed is because, unless it is going to shoot, there never is any ammo in the turret itself. Therefore, the turrets in EVE behave quite differently from today's gun turrets, and the point about the danger of having turrets loaded with antimatter sitting on the outside of your ship is quite valid.
As for missiles, there are currently two separate missile systems. The first generation of AEGIS cruisers had a four-tube missile turret mounted on a fully rotatable base in the bow of the ship. This turret could hold four missiles at a time, and the entire turret was lowered below deck where it was automatically reloaded with four more missiles stored in a dedicated magazine. This system, while good, was too slow to work well with the AEGIS combat system (which, by the way, is insanely good), and so a switch was made to placing missiles in upright launch tubes. Each tube could be reloaded, but the cruiser was able to have a greater quantity of missiles ready to fire.
The decision to move to upright launch tubes was not made out of fear that an enemy shell (or missile) would hit the exposed missile turret and detonate the missiles loaded in it. The upright launch system was utilized because it allowed for a greater rate of fire that could be sustained for a longer period of time. This characteristic was necessary because it allowed the AEGIS (Ticonderoga class) Cruiser to better fulfill one of its primary missions: shooting down incoming enemy missiles.

^I always assumed that ammo you "loaded" into a gun was actually placed in a magizine within your ship, but near the cannon to facilitate faster reloading between shots.
And yeah, VLS cells FTW! I'd like to see one pointing straight up in the top-middle of the thrasher....

I hope so that they "fix" it. When you look at a Siege launcher you see 6 or 8 "tubes" i dont know the correct number yet, its strange that you can fire only 1 torpedo after the other with 18 seconds time difference that makes no sense when you have 6-8 tubes with them you can fire 6-8 torpedos at ounce.
