hello, let me introduce myself. I'm a little unlucky forum loving pirate who is confused about the hole ransom thing in eve.
Last night I was sitting at a lovely planet and scanning the belts. Soon I discover the holy grail of piracy. I covetor! So I check again are I'm in low sec or empire. No 0.3 system. Surrounded by lowsec. Several other pilots in local. So I think it's to good to be true and most likley a trap.
But as we know by now its a covetor and I think I could blew it up before help comes. So I use my mighty myrmidon and warp to the given belt. And land 35km off the covetor. So I try to close in on him never thinking I gonna get him. But at 24km I'm able to scramble him and my warriors II are getting him in strucure soon.
Now local start flashing:
.... > chill terms? .... > ransom?
I think sure, sounds good to so I ransom him for 10M (don't wanna be greedy cause he told me he just lost a covetor) Disengage and warp to my scanning point to let the timer time out.
5 Minutes later i scan again to find a hurricane in local and look I find our miner sitting at the belt again. Now evil me thinks this is a joke hes not really mining again after he was ransomed 5 minutes earlier and I'm still in system.
The same dance begins I warp in scramble him. And my drones pop him before he dies.
Now he never smacks he told me his opinion that he thought ransom = i leave him in peace forever and ever. Nope my understanding is:
ransom means: you gimme money, I disengage and YOU run home!
to make this point clear I even put it into my current bio...
now should I feel bad about this? I'm all about honoring ransoms and would never ransom somebody and blew him up afterwards. But I do not give free mining rights. If I ransom somebody I give him a fair amount of time to get away and afterwards he is fair game again! And seriously 5 minutes is enough time to warp even with a barge!
rest of the night: chased by M3AN corp, hid in station, chased by an alliance, hid in station, chased but some guys, jumped into high sec, minmatar navy got me.

Edited by: Zhett Haukes on 09/04/2007 19:44:47 I had a similar situation the other day when I completed my first successful ransom attempt. After my timer had run out I saw that the guy was still at the same spot, it was very tempting to warp in and attack him again but as he had accepted my 5mil ransom of a destroyer (first number that popped into my head) without complaining at all I just sent him an eve-mail suggesting that he moved although I was not going to bother him again that night.
The way I see it, the ransom stops you blowing them up at that moment in time, not at any time in the future. When this safe time "runs out" is up to the pirate imo, so long as they give the target time to leave if they want to.
I was thinking that in the future I might work off the criminal cooldown - if I am flagged I won't go for the same person again, but if not - fair game.

I have before ransomed a guy, and told him for twice that amount he can mine here without me interfering for 12 hours. You really do have to make it clear to some folks as:
a) English sometimes isn't their language of choice. b) Some people are just really thick.
But I think you did right by him, and needn't feel bad about popping him after his obvious violation by strip miner of *your* roids.
You were protecting the roids weren't you?

yes i do. I live to protect and serve the roids and rats. And they pay me good. And I know both sites of the crime. Cause i can fly a retriver And spend countless hours hurting small baby roids to strip them of their precious bistot and gneiss.

most pirates ive encountered and paid ransom give me 5min to get the hell away :) so after 5min they can ransom me again... and thats proberly fair :) some are nice second time they see me though. and give me a cheaper ransom.

The 2nd time I would probably blow them up, then I don't have to go around thinking "did they have t2 or better fitted?".

tbh i've had the same happen to me a few times and i didn't hit them again. i would normally wait a couple of hours at least.
But, nobody can complain about what you did really. a ransom is paid quite simply to turn off ur scrambler and make sure they leave the engagement with their ship/pod. you honored that agreement.

i tried to ransom him twice. But I usually double my previous ransom for stupidty reasons. And its a difference if its a noob in a noob corp in his osprey (than I will be nice and explain everything and let him live). Or somebody who knows the game and sits in a covetor and prob has enough money. If he can't pay the ransom, he is gonna fly home in a pod ( cause I never get the damn pods.... )

Your ransom of 10m probably didnt phase him at all. His ship cost him a few times that I'd bet.
Anyway... generally let the guy know how long you will wait before engaging him again. Or just pop him in the first place :P

Should I ever be cornered by a pirate in lowsec space, is there a standard "code" for you all?Parley? Nah, but seriously, in terms of a ransom, do you accept goods of equal value?

Edited by: Liang Nuren on 10/04/2007 07:00:09 It usually works to ask "ransom?" in local.
I accept ISK - and don't think of it so much as ransom, more of a fee for the PVP training you just got.
Also, don't suggest that you can give them 25 mil in loot. I'd probably just pop you and see what else you had in there.

I guess it depends on how your feeling. Generally if I ransom someone i leave em alone for 24hours. Then theyre fair game. And to be honest theyd be stupid to hang around after i enter local as they know im after popping em.
Best ever ransom though was 3 guys who i missed in the belt. They docked and everytime they undocked i was sat there (0.4 system so its not like i could engage straight away) So i say to em.."look your miners, time is money. Give me 10 million and ill leave you alone" They refuse of course smacking me ect. 30 minutes later im still sitting there and then i get a convo "look ok you win, 20 million and you leave us alone?" Put a big 'ole smile on my face.
20 million and not a shot fired!!

I used to give my targets time until downtime before I would ransom/attack them again. Now though, I don't think I would.
If I catch them in another system, they are dead meat. If they are ratting in the same system where they were ransomed originally, I would give it a little thought and go for them again unless a special agreement was reached during the first ransom attempt.
