I have read much on the subject but I can't seem to get it to work.
First off you have to start off a corp..done
Do 1 storyline mission to get things going...done
I have done other mission for other corps and they seem to updating, but my standing towards caldari faction is going no-where. I have a standing of 6.0 with said faction, but no updates.
Have checked with my alts and all, still going no-where.
I assume my standing are bugged, still waiting to here from a petition to see if that is the case (/me weeps as tens of millions of isk are potentially lost per day by a 'bug'  )
Am I missing anything, any skills, buttons to press in the corp thingy or should I start another corp and get a massive faction hit for minmatar and gallente?

There are literally hundreds of threads on this.
Your standings are not bugged, the display is. Right click and "Show Compositions"

Did the show composition thing, still doesn't help me find out my standings with caldari state as it's not anywhere on my corp standings window.

Pull up the info page for Caldari State, go to Standings, then Likes.

Clear your cache, that updates the corp standings display.

Cleared cache and have also had a look on caldari state info and still no change in standings.

On the info page for Caldari State, does it even show your corp in the list under Standings / Likes?
If it does, what number does it show there? If you right click and pick "Show Compositions" on that line, what does it show there?
Also, your personal standing with Caldari State is only 5.64, not 6.0.

All you need to do is use an alt to look at the CEO of the corp you want to find out the standings about. Then when you see there face click on the Corp logo to the right. On the next window click on standings and you will see the Corp's standings and not the CEO's standings.

Done that, my corp does'nt even show up, Also I tried to anchor my POS and it said my standing with caldari state is 0.0

Do that every day in the vain hope it will magickally be fixed.
Is it possible I need to do soemthing else to boost my standings or get them going?

I had the same problem. It is a bug, corp standings take time to move to the average but can get stuck and stop increasing all together.
Keep doing storyline missions to jump start the standings into sorting themselves out. Best to try COSMOS missions as they'll get the standing increase faster.

Huzzah!, the cosmos mission has got things moving. Thanks the freaking gods for that.
