Being a diligent corp, we clean our books on a mothly basis. However, it is time to remove an absent player and I can't expel him. Any work around to this?

I'd like to know this as well. The direct Expel and the Vote-based expel didn't work for us.
Been broken like this for a while, right?

i thought it can be done by a corp vote on expelling the member but it takes atleast 24hours then

Make sure he doesnt have any shares. I think that this has caused me to not be able to expel people in the past.

Also would like to be able to change the status of an application after it's been approved or rejected, by myself or another corp member authorized to do so.

You have to do it when he's online, afaik.

How can you tell how many shares a person has? I have yet to find that somewhere.

Ya, we have the same problem - dude is not online or something odd - Apparantly the expelee must be online and docked in station for this to happen... Why, I do not know - now we cannot cull the dead meat either.
Would be superb to be able to withdraw or modify job offers...
