So i've heard so much about "tanking" in this game. Shield Tanking to be specific. What does this mean? i've been playing for over a month and i still don't quite get this.

Tanking refers to absorbing damage. In eve, it typically takes the form of repairing your armour or boosting your shield as you're being attacked by NPCs or other players. Shield also has the option of relying only on recharge rate instead of a shield booster, in which case it is called a passive tank. The main factors in a tank are shield/armour resistance (which decreases damage you take) and repair rate.
Resistance is split into four damage types (EM, Explosive, Kinetic and Thermal), which correspond to the four damage types that all damage in eve fits into. Lasers, for example, deal EM and Thermal damage while blasters deal Thermal and Kinetic.
That's the very basics.

Even more .. tanking is mainly keeping up with repairing the damage done (to shield or armor).
If you can repair faster then your enemy can damage you .. and you can keep repairing at that rate without your capacitor running out of juice .. thats called infini tanking.
Me being a pessimist is a win-win situation: Either i am right .. or its even better then i said. |

Some key points:
--> Tanking is "repairing more damnage than recieved". Plates CANNOT improve a "tank" but it can mean you last longer. --> If you can tank your opponents then they cannot do dmg to you (ignoring cap issues)
Shield Tanking --> Shield boosters use more cap/s than armor reps but will restore more shield/s. This is why it is often used in pvp. VERY high shield/s.
erm... what else... dunno ask more. Cool Ness

armor tanking is more popular in pvp from shield tank taking e-war space
