To one of the trillions of land-locked ground-huggers throughout known space, twelve seconds is a heartbeat. To them, twelve seconds isnĘt even worth thinking about. To the pod-bound however, twelve seconds is a lifetime. To us, twelve seconds is time enough to die a hundred times over.
To the pilot of a Manticore-class stealth bomber, twelve seconds is the average cycle time it takes to reload their cruise missile launchers. To me, twelve seconds represented a window of opportunity I had waited two months to exploit. To me, twelve seconds was a chance for cold, bloody, long overdue retribution. Although Caldari by birth, IĘve long since put aside racial pride in favor of survival. In addition to my time at the Academy, IĘve put in long hours training in all manner of ship and fighting styles. Caldari missile boats, Gallente drone carriers, Amarrian fighters, Minmatar haulersąwhatever the combination, IĘm qualified to fly it. Whatever tactics my opponent favors, I can come up with a counter strategy to match them.
So when I learned my prey had developed a taste for stealth bombers, I began constructing the instrument that would be sending his defiled corpse soaring through the frigid vacuum. The Thorax always struck a chord with me because of itĘs endless flexibility, its versatile nature echoing my own. But this particular ship had been crafted with a singular purpose. Every weapon, every system, every inch of conduit and wire installed with a single end in mind. My prey dropped out of warp, homing in on the fat, slow pack of Badger cargo-haulers with laser-like precision. Ignoring the mass of cargo containers strewn about the asteroid field. *****y. Foolish. He was a bully, picking and choosing fights only against those weaker so he could brag about his impressive list of kills.
A true combat veteran would have been more cautious about a group of haulers bragging in local about their huge mining profits. He would have been wary about anyone revealing their location on an unguarded channel. My prey was not such a pilot however. That I had already learned. ThatĘs why I had crafted my trap in this form. At the very least a veteran would have scanned the lot of them looking for the juiciest cargo. A veteran would have become immediately suspicious at the empty cargo holds and lack of any sort of defensive fittings. My prey was no such veteran. I had watched and waited long enough to know that.
He fumed as the pilots ejected and their pods warped away before he could lock any of them. Their part was done, their payments received. Spitting rage he locked on the empty haulers, determined to vent his fury on something. A veteran would have realized the trap, a smart veteran would have already run. Instead he made the gravest error he could have.
He fired. His missiles left the launch cradles. He was now effectively unarmed for twelve seconds.
Most pilots set their ship AIĘs to filter local scan results by distance. I gambled that his scanner was filled with the cargo canisters scattered nearby and that I was so far down the list, with his attention so focused on the Badgers, that he wouldnĘt notice me right away. As I engaged my afterburners and slid closer, I initiated a targeting solution, and he noticed me soon enough.
By the time I was close enough to engage the warp scrambler and cut off his retreat, he still had 7 seconds left to reload. I released my drone swarm and energized the armor hardeners. The drones sped towards him, eager to spit their lethal payloads at the insect that had so offended their master.
They ate into his shields, and suddenly local was filled with his insane cackling. 1 second. A cruise missile volley could tear a cruiser in half. He knew I was about to die. He knew that for all my troubles I couldnĘt kill him in time.

Zero. His first missile shattered my shield barrier, the other two slamming home into naked armorą.then the laughter stopped. As I said, I had crafted this weapon for one purpose. Tons of additional armor, hardened against the plasma warheads he favored, had been grafted onto the hull. Targeting systems, tracking stabilizers, even nanofactories to aid in armor repair had been sacrificed to make room for a massively thick sheath, giving this cruiser a level of protection rarely even afforded to battleships. The explosion had torn a gash in the beastĘs belly, but hadnĘt laid the killer blow he had expected.
Now the twelve seconds started anew. My drones buzzed about him, tearing chunks from his ship as railguns hammered slugs into his hull. Now my prey knew it was his time to die...

If a manticore kills a thorax, EVER, it's a sad day for humanity. Cute story, though.
Hm, come to think of it... can a SB kill *anything* nowadays?

Thanx!
No, my friend used to fly a manticore, and was one of those "missle supremecist" types...one day we got into this big debate, yknow of the old "I could pwn you and theres nothing you could do about it" variety and so I started thinking up ways I'd assasinate him just to shut him up
Anyways, was just going through my hard drive and found the story, so thought I'd post it. ☼☼☼ Life's a *****, then you get podded ☼☼☼
