i like the portrait idea. maybe you get to add different stuff, or some neat exclusive ship graphics, like putting a  on the side of your ship or a skull and crossbones. something you cant sell but still looks cool.

I think they should give you a special bonus "funny hat" you can put on your portait ;-)
But to be perfectly honest I love the idea of a previous poster that they should enable some kind of special ship painting - that way old players dont get any more UBER, the rift between players does not increase and still we are able to tell who has been around X ammount of time and who wasnt - by a single look at their ships ;-)

Things like:
You get given a far more useable "noob" ship when you get podded and such (only usable by those with a veteran reward of +2 years or something).
6 months : noob ship replaced by more useable ship
1 year : 5% more powergrid & 5% more CPU & some sort of insignia/rank for your portrait?
2 years : navy cruiser (can't be sold/traded - could be in the form of a package which can be unpacked into a cruiser of choice (out of 4 - one for each race)) & insignia/rank upgraded
3 years : 5% to falloff and optimal range / 5% to mining yield and cargo bay& insignia/rank upgraded
4 years : navy battleship (same as cruiser)& insignia/rank upgraded
Just some ideas off the top of my head
