Out of the blue, I received a player donation and I am not sure what I should do about it. Is there a protocol, other than saying "Thank you", for this? Do people donate out of the goodness of their heart or is it a way to gain someone's trust so they can gank them?

Dropping them a nice mail is usually a good thing to do.
And remember the gift, in six months or a year when you see a newbie do or say something plucky pay the gift forward to them and return the kindness shown to you.
And have fun spending it and blowing stuff up.

Since your char is rather new, I would guess someone just went to the newbie areas and donated some ISK to ease the initial grind.
It was probably just done out of goodness of their heart. There is no specific protocol on what to do... You can check who sent you the money in your wallet, if you wish to thank the individual. |

People donate to others regularly (and very often to new players). There is often an uptick in random donations at Christmas too.
There's often no need to say anything, but a thanks never hurts.
If it is a donation following a PvP kill, if you're a new players, it's also an opportunity to ask questions. A lot of people in the community are always ready to help others learn the game.

I was gonna send more, but figured I'd save it for the next keen newb(I have already donated today).
So nice to see amongst the carnage of entitlement that has been upon us recently.

What's wrong with the name Demonspawn 666??
My mum gave me that name!
@op.
Any mmo can be a very lonely thing, join a corp, ask questions and talk crap on the forums. It really does make the game that much better.
Even mail your benefactor and ask him for advice, he might point you in the direction of a good corp, there are many bad or indifferent ones out there, and take you under his wing.

Actually, thats kinda freaky.
I came from a ******** space mmo six months ago, it was/is dying so was suggested I try eve.
I was in a guild (like a corp) named SPAM (SPACE PIRATES AND MADMEN).
I like to spamalot (revisits the obvious temptation to link in the camelot song from the holy grail)
Yes. The guild name was appropriate and yes, it was my suggestion!
@op, the forums are fun, don't be afraid to hang out here when things are quiet, too many new people are intimidated by the bitter vets on the forums, but hey, it's a nice place to hang and you pick up some useful info.

eh screw it, might as well go down the rabbit hole and see how far you go. Just remember that whole don't fly what you can't afford to lose. If you are flying a t1 insured ship the loss should be almost nothing in the worst case that you get ganked. So it really isn't all that bad of a case considering you hopefully learned something from it and didn't lose anything too valuable.
best case, well there is almost no limit to what could happen. Hopefully at the very least you make a bit more money and/or have a bit of fun.

You're doing exactly what you should do all the time in eve. Question everything. If something looks to good to be true, its a trap. If it looks like a trap, it is, use your batphone. Make friends, they have doomsdays. Always have a plan to doomsday everyone on-grid. (see above)
If i have a chance to log in this weekend i have a gift for you as well. Enjoy the holidays and Welcome to EvE. Fly Crazy.
Signatures wer cooler when we couldn't remove them completely.

Take ISK and spend it on exotic dancers.

My first couple of days two people in corps chat gave me some isk,
I bought some stuff and sold some stuff and paid the people who donated me isk back.
I can afford to go play around and lose a few things and have some fun shooting stuff,

I've donated ISK to newer pilots because many often associate PVP with a negative emotion rather than "this is how you play the game". Mainly because they're trying to solo an MMO with very little knowledge of the game mechanics. I've blown up their ships, donated enough ISK for two new ships then invited them to corp.
