I have just encountered what I like to call the "Xerox" principle of television production. Gundam Seed was a pretty awesome anime. Not the best, certainly, but entertaining and engaging. Good plot, good characters; a shocker for a franchise notorious for cheese. Simple summary of the first two episodes: ORB is a neutral nation which owns an orbital space station called Heliopolis. Some special forces from ZAFT, the enemies of the Earth Alliance, come in and steal some state-of-the-art mobile suits. One of them is taken and piloted by an ORB citizen who becomes the main character. The fight escalates, resulting in massive damage to the space station as both sides become more and more reckless with their weaponry, culminating with a massive hole blown in the side using an incredibly powerful laser beam and all the air being sucked out, obviously a catastrophe. A state-of-the-art new battleship, the first of its class, the Archangel, is launched to join the fight. skip 48 episodes war ends New series comes out, a sequel! Its called Gundam Seed Destiny! It must be good! Simple summary of the first two episodes: ZAFT, currently at peace with Earth, has some state-of the-art mobile suits on a space station. Some special forces from Earth come in and steal the state-of-the-art mobile suits. One other mobile suit is taken and piloted by the best friend of the main character from the first series. The fight escalates, resulting in massive damage to the space station as both sides become more and more reckless with their weaponry, culminating with a massive hole blown in the side using an incredibly powerful laser beam and all the air being sucked out, obviously a catastrophe. A state-of-the-art new battleship, the first of its class, the Minerva, is launched to join the fight. ITS... LIKE... FARKING... MADLIBS... . Add new characters to replace some of the old ones, swap around the rest, switch the sides around a bit, add a few weapons, and change some of the numbers... boom! Entirely new series following the exact same plot of the old one. This is like if Peter Jackson released a new Lord of the Rings Destiny, in which the elves take over Middle Earth using new rings of power and an orc, Odorf, from his home town of Erihs Eht, has to destroy it in Mount Mood in order to save the world. Devolved into cookie-cutter status. Macross, now that's an anime worth it's own neutons of thrust power.
