A very simple suggesstion this one:
Lets have an option to apply our overview settings to the main view.
So if I'm not showing wrecks on my overview then they won't appear in the main view (Well the model would but the icon won't).
Naturally this would want to be a toggle.
Removing drones and wrecks from my main view would no doubt be able to grab me back a few fps during large battles. Would also make it much easier to single out where all those durned annoying interceptors are amongst all the drones, wrecks and big ships.
And while I'm at it the client could use some framerate preservation built into it.
Basically as the framerate drops it turns off a series of things in order of priority to try and keep it up.
So for example...
Framerate drops below 10fps
Audio is disabled Still below 10fps? starfield is disabled Still below 10fps? Turret Effects disabled Still below 10fps? Trails and engine effects disabled Still below 10fps? UI Transparency is disabled Still below 10fps? Damage messages disabled. etc
Again this would need toggles and verious settings. Heck it could start doing things like changing the UI to a much less resource hungry one by getting rid of ALL the shiny effects.
Obviously this won't make network lag any less evil but it will help with clientside lag.

I agree 100%. Windows rendering and rest of the GUI/HUD takes alot of time.

wrong way around. drop the model and keep the icon. an icon is much more simple than the model.
anyway finegrained graphics settings would suffice (LOD, mipmap, model complexity, texture detail etc.). Every modern 3d game has these, just EVE I have to force via graphics drivers.

Nope right way around I'm afraid. Big fleet fight you zoom WAY out so none of the models get rendered anyway. However this results in all the icons forming a huge impenetrable mass that eats your framerate (rendering an icon isn't accelerated like rendering a ship is) and more importantly obscures everything going on in the battle.
Eve HAS LOD for ships. Each one has a full detail, unlit/low-poly and dot model. You'll spot them if you zoom in and out. The problem is that even with ship LOD it needs it elsewhere in the client as the actual 3D part of it is probably the fastest bit.
