I know it's about the 100'th topic about loading out a Thorax, but I was thinking about this setup:
Hi: 4x 250mm Railgun 1x Small Smartbomb
MeD: 1x Medium Shield Booster 2x Shield Hardeners
Lo: 2x Reactor Control Unit 1x Co-Processor 1x Magnetic Field Stabilizer 1x Tracking Enhancer
And wanted to know from the experts if it is any good against NPC's in low security space (0.0/0.1/0.2).
Thanks --- There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take credit. Try to be in the first group, there is less competition there. |

Its a very good setup. Chuck in 8 heavy drones and your set. Against heavy missiles your not gonna have much luck with that small sb. Hard to time it right.
Also I'd stay away from 0.0 in a crusier.

Mine is much the same except I use 3 250s and 2 150s. I accept the missile hits and use a shield amplifier and an ab instead of the two hardeners. This lets me add an extra damage and tracking mod in the low slots along with a cap relay.

Not gonna help you much in 0.0 space. Without a MWD you gonna get into serious trouble when you come across cruisers that MWD close to you.

MWD is a cruisers dream. Do not leave home without it. You dont need the shields when you are up thier rears with blasters and your drones are smashing them. Just consider a mix of drones cause those scouts will be thier targets and they dont last. --------------------------
Garsh ma it soo cool killing people in there space thingies |

I'd suggest putting in a cap relay in the low slot, they can make the difference from life or death. ______________________

using 250s and 150s on a thorax is a good idea, but remember to use the right ammo to get the most appropriate range.

Edited by: Dash Ripcock on 30/12/2003 00:05:16 It all depends on what you want to use it for.
With NPCs, range is probably the better option, so I would suggest some 250s with 150s incase they get close or are fast moving. Don't forget an MWD, they will save your life many times over and make travelling to low sec less of a pain in the arse. As for the lows, I would suggest some cap relays and if you are taking on the real big boys, a warp drive stabiliser. I prefer up close, but that's just me! If you are on your own or with a non-missile friend, try and use your drones as much as possible. Relase them AFTER the NPC attacks you, then they stand less chance of being missile fodder. The drones auto-attack these days, so they are bloody amazing against multiple foes.
For PvP, I would suggest something a little more 'up close'. Keep your range and they will bombard you with cruises and torps, along with any big guns they have. Get up close with the MWD, webify them, then unleash hell with Blasters and Heavy Drones. I use 3 Neutrons w/ AM, which do about 100+ to frigates and 250+ to large cruisers. I also have some 150s, which occasionally do 100+ damage at the right range, and they are higher tracking so useful for frigates. Try and release your drones as late as you can, because otherwise they will take them out instead, leaving you exposed. Use the drones effectively and it will be like having another cruiser along for the ride, because they pack a serious wallop.
Hope this helps a little

Edited by: Gariuys on 30/12/2003 00:12:34 This is what I use and too great effect I think: 3x 250mm prototype gauss 2x dual 150mm prototype gauss all thorium ammo
1x c5-l medium booster 1x y-t8 mwd 1x invunerability field
1x RCU 1x power diagnostic 1x capacitor power relay 1x magnetic vortex stabilizer 1x fourier transform I tracking program
8x ogre
(tiny note, don't get this blown up, think it's around 35mil+ too replace it, can't remember didn't buy it all at once lol ) ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

These rats mwd to me THEN they turn their heads back to get optimal range for themselves. With this set up my shield is always up.

this is very similar to my npc setup also except I trade a hardner for a MWD. My lows may be a little bit different too. My setup works great, just don't let them get wihtin 10k of u. If they close the gap out of ur optimal range, MWD further out and continue.
And the above suggestions are right, from what I have heard and personally seen I would never take a cruiser out to 0.0 npc territory anymore. You would not stand a chance unless you found a small spaun. All the ones I have seen are 10+ with super duper tech II cruisers on the low end. Forget the NPC BS spauns. ------------------------------------------------

Thorax is a damn fine ship man. Loaded up with heavy drones and an up-close setup, I would say a thorax would own a moa any day of the week and twice on Sunday. I used to use the 3x 250mm prototype gauss and 2x 150mm prototype gauss setup, but I hear blasters is a very good way to go as well.

Even with improvements blasters are a pain now against the new NPCs. Even the little ones are locking on to you from 60km exant and damaging you from 50km just using light missiles.
Went back to using 3 250mm and 2 150mm named railguns, but that config used too much ammo for the thorax and its little cargo hold. Plus the 150mm does not do enough damage to my satisfaction and lacks the tracking to successfully deal with close in fast targets. So they're replaced by a couple of focused named medium pulses which totally owns the named 150mm in tracking, flexibility, and the ability to hit near and fast targets. (Focused Modulated Pulse vs. 150mm Prototype rails).
