That's pretty awesome. I think I remember seeing a guy show how he could get plasma to form a barrier using magnets, ostensibly for the same thing in the article.
Now all we need is to slap the shields on a ship powered by one of these Ion Drive Thingies, slap some decent lasers on it and we're set.

The science behind shielding isnt really all that far fetched, the only problem is what it could potentially be doing to stuff inside the shield as well as the usual cost/size/efficiency limitations. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Nothing really new, the earth shields us from radiation in the same way. It's more a matter of engineering than science really.

I knew a guy who wanted a Jessica Alba holoprogram. He had a thing about tutus and combat boots, though, so I'm REALLY not sure I want to know the rest...

Yeah, we take all the credit from the Canadians for the robot arms they build. You know, the big ones on the space station and space shuttle with the red maple leaf on them.

Edited by: ToxicFire on 18/04/2007 23:01:45 EM shielding has been on the active project lists for years its even one of the main sub projects of the mars missions because its probably the most cost effective and engineering effective design even though not complete protection because it doesn't have any secondary radiation creation properties of other absorbent materials that are usually used for shielding, but it has the drawback of not been able to protect against any form of radiation that doesn't carry an em charge, as such must be used in conjunction with other forms of physical shielding. Tests done by nasa labs have already shown how effective it can be, so most likely we're going to see this in use for the trans mars journeys and lunar facilities by the end of the 2020's. The real question is who's gonna make it back to the moon first its a three way race this time with 3 completely different objectives.
