Not true. There were MMOs which had very friendly civilized (I would even say family like) community. Usually because the game world was not the biggest and the games were not so popular (the more people the more ....). Examples of this used to be Planeshift (I do not play it for long long years though, so cannot vouch for current state) and most certainly Oberin (struggling to survive these days, basically dead, had it-¦s peak around 15 years back).
Your usual big MMOs, mostly yeah... Just in WoW it-¦s teens calling everyone names in random groups and for comparison in EVE adults saying you should burn in a car accident. Somehow I can live with the first and chuckle (I do not play WoW for quite a while though, just saying), it-¦s harder to live with the second - but on the bright side, EVE has very very large ignore list (used to have hundreds of players there when I was still playing).  |

I think this type of behaviour is why stupid people become famous or moreover why the movie Idiocracy continues to be very close to the documentary genre instead of "fiction".
My only thoughts on "why" is "Parable of the Monkey".
Essentially by removing typical MMO constraints in games you in turn invite a culture of "lord of the flies" or moreover it is quite close to paralleling the behaviours found in child soldiers. One can start the experience of with innocence and an enthusiasm to uphold modern virtues around fairness, however, after a few months of playing one will find that's not a shared place.
The issue with this attitude towards the behaviour is long-term it becomes a self-fulling prophecy of decay. It's negative reinforcement with an emphasis on weakening behaviour not strengthening, which in turn will actually be the very reason for the games continued stagnated growth. The success of this game isn't beyond 40-60k players, and while some may praise that number as being positive it in turn is a fraction of the markets size, moreover it limits CCP's ability to extend the game further due to lack of funding / constraints (not saying they aren't doing it tough or anything).
It appears CCP are making strong attempts to grow the game further, given the inclusion of "Alpha" accounts. However, they may appear to assert that the lack of stickiness within the game is likely due to "complexity" of features. Yes, thats fair assement in that context but i'd assert the reason for lack of growth isn't the nature of the games complexity more over the immaturity of the audience participating in the game daily.
You do find mature adults in corps that are in the game for the right reasons, but the ratio of maturity to "child soldier" rule of law, is balanced more in favour of the later, "survivals for the fittest and you look weak" is the mantra.
Until the behaviour changes you'll have the revolving door of user(s) that either stick it out or immediately leave. Eventually the vetrans will get sick of the same circle jerk sessions they participate in daily (warp, kill low rank chars, warp, kill low rank characters, refresh killboard, kill more, accumulate wealth, fade out...)
Sometimes you just need to swap the monkeys out of the cage and replace them with new ones in order for behaviour evolution to occur.

So I guess he was exposed to that part of OUR game. Yet it has to be mentioned that he also had expectations of the game which were.. unreasonable. As a fellow gamer, I wish he was exposed to the other parts of the game that he missed. |
