So.. why no fleet formation buttons?
Wing commander or fleet comander gets option to organize fleet in specific patterns.. since they can warp us already.. they should be able to automagicly access our flight computers and move us all into formations.
Rather then a mismatched blob of ships colliding with each other when they exit warp.. if they had formations then bumping could be changed to do damage as this would eliminate the worry about friendly collisions while warping.

dont like it,
will mean that as much as possible everyone will ahve to get their weopons to do max dmg at the same range... and for people of differnet skills and different ship setups, it might be hard.
second i dont see any formation that work properly as it were.... mabey if you could set everyone to orbit a ship but even then people have their own personal way of how to pvp and im pretty sure not everyone wants to obit

Formations are planned, but aren't in for the same reason line of sight isn't - lag.

I think a good thing would be if you could warp gangs "at once". Like the current gangwarp only that all ships warp at the same moment (faster aligned ships idle) and adjusting their warpspeeds to match the slowest. 1. The whole gang would be there at once! 2. ???? 3. Profit!

They've tried to put them in before, but there's some technical problems that prevent it. I don't think it's a priority atm because of that.

Yea I'm talking more so regarding mass fleet manuvers rather then actual fights.
Being able to warp an entire fleet in a set formation would have advantages.
Warp in a screen wall formation of frigates and cruisers
Then warp in an X formation of BC's and BS's that will show up nicely spaced out so there is less blobage.
Or warp in entire fleet with cruisers in front.. BC and BS in the middle and support ships surrounded bny the BS/BC formation.. Like a sphere formation with a cluster of support ships in the center.
Its space.. its vast.. its military and it requires formations to be more effective and "realistic" Name an army/navy or any military branch that dosent love a formation. :P

Lag is on the server side, not client side, I am afraid. ------

I read somewhere recently that they're working on formations for the near future.

Uh Rikher...
If a gang aligns...then that's exactly what happens...they all warp at the speed of the slowest ship...and if you're all aligned...you warp instantly...
Tee hee...

Although its an interesting idea, and watching a gang of ships flying in formation would be cool, theres not much point tbh, as soon as you get into the fight, people are gonna be orbiting this, aligning to that, blah blah blah. Bye Byez formation ------------

It would be interesting but.....
If you take control from the pilots it will become impractical really fast.
As it is you can Have everyone align and warp all together. Have the BS warp and a second later warp the smaller ships (they will still beat the BS to the target. and on and on depending on who you want to show up first second so forth and so on. Just takes a little coordination and a little practice.
Forcing ships in a formation before you enter warp would be fun but why would you ?
But yes definitely dictating a formation on warp exit (for those in the same bubble) would provide some interesting tactical options.

Forced warps are poo anyway.
Hate it when the commander(or some other hotshot like that) group warps and i'm next to a fight with my optimal range at 80km

Because, as much as it would like to think it is, Eve is not a very good strategy game. I like to think of it as MarioKart in SPACE.
Hope you brought your red shell, cuz I'm already stocked up on banana peels. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

Aside from the range being a consideration, just what benefit would you gain from having ships in a certain "configuration" from each other?
Tactically, as it stands i don't see how this would matter...

I seem to recall this being a feature discussed by the Devs as a way to encourage smaller fleets, where Formations would give certain bonuses or extra management in gangs. It was even hinted at as a possible Revelations 2 feature (and was actually advertised as a Revelations proper feature in several articles). I expect to see them eventually, if not soon.

I agree, from a tactical standpoint it doesn't make much sense. Besides, all it would serve would be to drag a group of smaller ships into range of someone's smartbombs, all at once. :)

I'll see your bananas and raise you a blue shell, with a pair of officer Bob-ombs.
There are no formations in EVE because it is still very much a 2D game slapped into a 3D environment. Ship control in EVE needs serious love, because every command a pilot can give really only works if your target only ever moves on the same plane as you do, and so trying to develop 3D formation abilities with 2D ship commands is... er, impossible.

I think formations would be f-in awesome and would love to see some combat take place like that.
If you can't think of any tactical reason to use a formation, you shouldn't be a fleet commander.
