I think he's overrated. He has some good songs, but they tend to be gimmicky like his finger tapping song. I really don't see it. I really don't like him or his G3 buddies (Steve Vai and John Petrucci). The three of them are ridiculously good PLAYERS, but I don't consider good musicians.

My thoughts exactly. They can make a guitar sound like an arpeggiating synth, but what's the point? It doesn't make good songs in most people's opinion.

I much prefer Vai myself, from what limited selection of both I've heard though. He just seems to be more my type of player, bluesy kinda stuff.

That's a fair statement. Still, doesn't stop me listening in awe.
I've played piano for 7 years and started learning guitar about a month ago. I have my piano for playing good music, on the guitar I'm just aiming to be able to mess around and do stuff like that.

Overrated. He is good at guitar, but his songs arent that great. I prefer someone who maybe doesnt have the best skills, or know all the nifty techniques, but can write and play a song that actually rocks your socks off :P

Add Yngwie Malmsteen to the list... though Trilogy is still a kick-butt album.
