And I don't think 15 bucks is unreasonable either. Many singleplayer games these days cost 60, and provide 10 hours of game, if that. If you do not have a lot of time to play, then 15 bucks a month may not be worth it, but that's the nature of the model. If you get netflix and end up watching maybe one movie every other month, then you won't get a lot of mileage out of it either. And ultimately, bills have to be paid, a server park needs to be maintained and the hamsters need to be fed.
On the actual topic: Just because there's a thread about every one of these topics every other week or so, it doesn't mean that a majority wants any of that. People are more likely to complain than they are to praise. So, what you see are a couple of unhappy players, but the majority remains silent and simply plays the game. Considering that, the number of people complaining is actually rather low. It's completely understandable if more security is what you want, however, then Eve may not be the game for you.
There's no point in turning Eve into pretty much every other MMOG ever, this time with spaceships. Look at all those MMOGs where your money and assets are secure, and where you can experience most of the content solo, and how they are doing in terms of subscriber numbers (and I use the word "subscriber" loosely here, as most don't have a subscription model these days). They start off great, with many players, then crash to much lower numbers after the novelty has worn off after two or three weeks, and then the numbers keep declining slowly for a couple of years.
The longevity of Eve comes from the fact that you can loose everything, but bounce back from it. There's always something to (re-)build, a revenge to take, a sandcastle to destroy, tears to be harvested. Your decisions in this game matter, exactly because you can get blown up everywhere and at any point in the game. And this does not get old nearly as quickly as happily grinding to the current expansions level-/gearscore-cap and waiting for the next one.
Eve relies on people loosing their ships and money all the time, so they have a reason to rebuild them. And this has worked for almost 14 years now. Eve simply isn't one of those mayfly games, that attracts lots and lots of casual players, most of which will quit and move on to the next game after a month or two. Eve is not a game for everyone, but it has proven to have staying power just by being mean and unfair. If it's not for you, just find another game. If CCP could not make do without the vast majority of casual MMOG players, then they would have changed the game many years ago. |
