I was wondering if pirate corporations like to have carrier pilots for beefing up gatecamps and transporting large amounts of gear between lowsec pockets. I want to join a pirate corp sooner or later and I would think that having a frontline combat carrier would be a boost for being recruited into some of the better corps out there (in addition to having a good attitude, knowing how to have fun on voicechat, pwn n0bz, etc.) Am I on the money?

A carrier is becoming a must have item for outlaws..
My carrier lets me haul my kit between low sec pockets with ease and also comes out to play when the heros visit. (though I would never comit a carrier against a blob without support, that would be suicide.)

Pirate Carriers
I don't know how us lowlife scum afford such toys, but we do.
Can't say we use them to beef up gate camps as such. Many people are misguided about the use of a carrier in a fleet.

I know a fair few of the pirate corps have them now but I seldom see them involved in gatecamps etc, might just be my bad luck? Although the one or two times I HAVE seen them in camps, they've certainly used them properly
As Tiller said, I've normally seen them undocked to deal with Heros, same with Dreads too. _____________

Carriers are very useful logistic tools when used properly in low-sec, combined with a freighter pilot u can move large amount of goodies into your home base without the hassle of escorts.
Simple example: freighter pilot gets the monthly shopping done in empire and gets escorted one jump into low sec and drops it all of in a corp hanger there, Carrier pilot cyno's to that station, escort / scout group protecting freighter keep the carrier safe, while carrier cyno jumps back and forth between that low-sec system and home base till the shopping is in the fridge.

Yup - For example, i used to pirate in a pocket of about 7 low sec systems. And only two roads to high sec. As such, when you're -10, the only way to get your ships out is with an alt who can put them in a hauler (bb rigs + insurance) or get him to fly them out, which is a ***** if its CBCs lol. So carriers are great, when jumping your stuff to a new feeding ground

I know how we afford them...
It's all those empty Industrials.
Seriously though, most Pirate corps I know have one if not more carriers that are wheeled out to play whenever the locals turn up brandishing pitched forks and flaming torches.

The only thing I have ever used mine for, which is very disappointing tbh, is when the mob comes a lookin' for me.
I'd really like to use it more offensively... but I find it can be a pain in the arse to move around. Really have got to plan around using it.

Oh and, I didn't get this to gather dust in a station or camp no gate.
Many a carebear shall cry as I start getting my support skills perfected
Oh and as for how I can afford toys like that, let's just say my alt does alot of white collar piracy Kublai is looking for a new corp! recruit me today |

That's pretty much what I figured. Thanks for all the responses everyone. I'll definitely be training up for a Thanatos now (I want Gall BS V anyway for sweet drones and blasterboat action). Maybe I'll give some of your corps a call when I can actually fly one ;)

I've seen a carrier taken out by less than 10 guys. The carrier, mis-used, can be taken by a small force. Btw, if you have a carrier pilot in your corp/alliance and he's crying for help in chat...just let him die alone for being stupid.

Yeah, a few blasterthrons with tacklers and an ECM boat or two can pwn a carrier.
But I would not fly a Thanatos alone unless I had some cash to burn.

tbh there's nothing to be ashamed of in losing a thana to 3 gank megas and an astartes dps with nos from a pilgrim and domi on you, plus the others. that could be over 5000 dps in that gang easily.

Killmails are ranked, in terms of the most damage dealt, over a 15 minute period/session change.
If the thanatos was doing a mission, or ratting, and recieved 15 minutes of continuous fire, the dps might add up to more than that of the attacking force for however long they shot him for.

In this case, Yes :P
The carrier was running his smartbomb almost the whole time and his mission rats did a good chunk of the killing while we nossed, and waited for cap to die to send drones in. Would have taken a few more minutes without the mission rats, but he would have died all the same. Need something hauled? |

Edited by: LVSOCOM on 24/04/2007 03:45:21 This carrier was in an encounter and had been for at least 20 minutes previous. At the time of his death (and during) the fight there were 3 npc bs's. He did have dual reps and somewhat focused resists.
He also had a few smart bombs that caused us to loose the ability to use drones for long periods of time. Wish I (and the other domis) had brought sentries because I could have released outside his range and gotten a bit higher on that ranking.
