Hi guys.
I'v just started playing EVE, but I'm having a little trouble understanding a few parts of the skills system. I'v read the guide here, and some others elsewhere, but I'm still confused, so I figured I'd ask here :)
What's the difference between level and rank when referring to skills? My character sheet shows:
(using my Engineering skills as an example)
level 3 Engineering / Rank 1 / SP: 8000 of 45255
level 2 Shield Compensation / Rank 2 / SP: 2829 of 16000
level 3 Shield Operation / Rank 1 / SP: 8000 of 45255
level 2 Shield Upgrades / Rank 2 / SP: 2829 of 16000
+4 Engineering skills trained, for a total of 21,658 skillPoints.
I understand the Level shows how well you know the skill, but i havn't found an explanation of what the rank means anywhere. Also, the SP xxx of xxxx... Is this the SP you need to invest until the next rank, or next level? How many ranks would you need to train before your skill increases to the next level.
Apologies for asking a question that's probably documented everywhere, but i'm having a total mental block :(
Thanks for your time,
Sorrow.

Edited by: Strife Phoenix on 23/04/2007 13:05:27 Each skill consists of 5 levels and the "rank" suggests how many skillpoints each level contains.
A "rank 1" skill takes a lot less time and skillpoints to reach next level in than a "rank 3" skill.
The SP xxx of xxx simply means that you have trained xxx points of xxx points in total to finish that level of the skill.

So the rank is an attribute of the skill itself than a marker as to how far I'v progressed in it? Now everything makes sense :)
Thanks ever so much :)

Rank is basically a multiplier for the time a skill takes to train. Rank 2 takes twice as long to learn as Rank 1 - assuming the same values for Primary and Secondary Attributes. Rank 3 is three times longer than Rank 1 and so on.
So if you have a Rank 1 skill using, for example Int as Primary and Mem as Secondary and it will take an hour to train then a Rank 2 skill also dependent on Int as Primary and Mem as Secondary will take 2 hours to learn to the same level.
SP xxxx of xxxxx shows the number of sp's you need to reach the next Level of the skill. So if you just learned a skill to Level 1 the xxxx of xxxxx shows the totals for Level 1 (1st no.) and Level 2 (2nd no.). If you part train a level you can see what you still need. I often train a few sp's worth of Level 1 in a skill so I carry the skill book in the chars head not his cargo hold
Does that make it clearer - or just clear as mud??
