Being I have been hearing a lot about how great Linux is, and that Ubuntu is really user friendly, I'm going to try it out, the only problem is I have never tried to install an OS (other than Vista in a clean install), so I need some help. Is it difficult to install and upgrade, I have a copy of 6.06 I got from a friend a while ago I was going to use then upgrade to the latest version. Will this wipe out my hard drive in the process, as I have a lot of stuff I don't want to lose. Will it interfere with my install of Vista (I'm keeping it), because I'm rather fond of it and I need it still. Lastly, would it be easier to upgrade through 6.06 to 6.10 to 7.04, or just go straight to 7.04?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey ;p
I dunno about installing ubuntu, and why you like vista in beyond me. But generally installing a fresh 7.04 would PROBABLY be easier then updating :| I think its free to dl off the website so you don't need the cd ;p ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)

If you don't create new partitions to install Ubuntu, the process will wipe out all existing data on your drive. What you want to do is resize the partition that contains your Vista OS and the data you want to keep, and create two partitions formatted to Linux Ext3 and Swap file systems, then install Ubuntu on the new partitions. Basically you want to dual boot Linux and Windows, this way you get to keep the existing stuff. You should do some reading on precisely how to dual boot before you make an attempt, or you might end up losing important data.
Here are some sites: http://www.matthewjmiller.net/howtos/dual-boot-linux-and-windows/ https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/installation-guide/i386/non-debian-partitioning.html http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p18.htm#If_you_are_about_to_install_Ubuntu
Be prepared for the worst case, and back up your data! --

The built-in partition manager in the installer should be able to resize the partitions properly, but I'd recommend defragmenting first to get all the data to the front of your drive, away from where you'll be making the Linux partition.
The dual-booter (the loader that lets you choose OSs) is installed automatically by Ubuntu.
I'd personally recommend the ReiserFS file system; in my experience its quite a bit faster, especially with tens of thousands of small files like Linux often has.

Be careful not to lose power to your computer during the installation. I just nearly breeze-blocked my PC :D. Power cut out mid-installation. Ouch. :P ___________________________________

That shouldn't break anything unless the power cuts out in the middle of changing the partition tables...
in which case you are screwed

Thanks for the information, I'm going to read up on it some more before I try installing it. I'm installing on my laptop so I can go about 2 hours easy on battery power so I don't think I'll need to worry about losing power.

Go straight for 7.04. Pretty much all the problems you're ever going to have with Linux will be in the first few hours after you've installed it, and 7.04 has far less of them than 6.06. The hardware and driver detection in 7.04 is a dream compared to older versions. --------

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 few days ago and it worked fine. It resized a partition (took a long time) and all my data is safe . Now i can boot WinXP or Ubuntu.
I didnt defrag or use any special format (because i didnt know it would be useful). Only had minor issues with the screen resolution and keyboard layout.
