I would like to see dedicated Anti-Missile Weapons that can target and destroy any hostile Missile in range.
Some would argue that smartbombs are such weapons, but i disagree on that. Smartbombs just blast everything in range.
What im looking for is a Laser/projectil/hybrid-based weapon system. That system should have a 40% Base-chance to kill one missile in range per given time. With a skill to boost the chance to kill the missile (+5% per level) and another skill to boost the number of missiles it can track and kill in a given time. This pure defence system should need a high slot but no free turret slot. There could be different versions with better base-chance or tracking-speed.
A system like that would be able to give ships like the armageddon or the thorax a much better chance against the caldari missile-boats.
Just an idea that came to me while fighting a hord of blood pirates in 0.0 with a dozent missiles streaking at me.
May you live in interresting times. |

Interesting idea. Maybe make those weapons available only to a specific race's ships??? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "You humans are extremely irritant with your illogical behaviour and irrational thought" -------- |

I thought there was such a thing as Defender missles that could destroy other missles. HOWEVER, if you are in a Armagedeon or the likes then that does not do you much good since your ship cannot use launchers.
I would like to see a Passive anti-missle autocannon that might not hit the missle all the time (say 25 to 30 Percent) but that would automatically engage any inbound missle.
It should takeup One Turret Slot and use about the same power and energy as a 200mm Autocannon.
Another suggestion would be a "Missle tracking Mod" that would occupy a Low or Medium slot and convert a Regular 200mm Autocannon to a Anti missle gun, That way you would need both components and take up both a med and a high slot. This would allow flexability but make players really evaluate what was important to have onboard.

Is my thorax not supposed to be able to withstand caldari missile boats for ages, then? I must be doing something wrong.

Great, so the Thorax will have no downside to it and become an uber-cruiser. With its 5 turret slots it can afford to toss one away for missile defense and still pack a hefty punch. I can see why you wouldn't consider smartbombs to be a viable alternative since that kills your drones. A Thorax with its drones and with this new anti-missile defense there is not much to stop it.
Every ship should have an Achille's Heel. For the Thorax it is missiles.

Like the M61A1 Phalanx CIWS weapons the navy use on just about every ship. That'd be badass :)

Maybe you coudl set drones to a point defence mode. instead of going after enemy ships they woudl orbit the mothership and try to hit incoming missles.

I was thinking about this, and the possibility of having anti-missile drones. Drones are not viable combat weapons, especially against 0.0 pies. I agree with the point that every ship must have a weakness, but to say that two Battleships (the Dominix and Armegeddon) can have no defense against a missile apart from their shields and hull seems crazy to me. These drones would have to be extra heavy (i.e roughly 1000 out of drone bay) and slow, thus unable to catch every missile fired at the ship. You could also implement other types of drones, such as single use warp scramblers etc.

The idea of Drones that are or could be tasked for Missle Defense would be a neat idea.
What is the Achiles Heel for the Caracal? It can mount 5 Launchers so it has one or two to spare for Defender missles?
I am not saying that you make this turret system absolute fool proof, I am saying that it would give a ship being pounded by 5 missle turrets from 40k away a fighting chance. "Its all fun and games til somebody gets Podded" |

The Caracal is a slow ship (very sluggish) and not particularly durable as cruisers go. With its somewhat low capacitor it can't run much for very long (i.e. afterburners to maintain its distance). Go get next to one and it is toast. Since it is slow it really won't be able to keep separation from most cruisers or frigates that want to do this.

I might add that the whole trick to using missiles is overwhelming the opponents defenses. If I have 2 launchers with Defenders and you have 2 launchers tossing cruise missiles at me you are very unlikely to ever score a hit. If a Caracal has 2 launchers filled with Defenders and three with cruise (or whatever) against my 2 Defender missile launchers the Caracal is still unlikely to score a hit. Especially if I use Assault Launchers that fire very quickly and the Caracal is using standard or heavy launchers.
The Caracal really needs to use all 5 launchers offensively to have a chance at getting a ship with modest missile defense as it is. If you don't have missile defense that is your own lookout and you are in trouble. If you are in a ship doesn't really have missile defenses (e.g. Thorax) then you need to close distance on the Caracal ASAP. Depending on the Thorax's speed, the Caracal's speed, what missiles the Caracal is firing and luck determines whether the Thorax can make it or not. Once the Thorax is on top of the Caracal it is pretty much all over for the Caracal. If you are in an Arma or Dom chances are you can beat down the Caracal long range before he beats you anyway.
All tactics. This is way mixed formations of ships are a good idea. Different ships can make up for what your ship lacks to either defend you or go kill the things that hurt you most before they get you.

If you get warp scrambling drones then I want warp scrambling missiles. Upon impact they scramble for, say, 30 seconds till the effect wears off. While we're at it I want web missiles too.

That's something else I'm doing wrong, then. I really must learn more about combat, so that my strategies will stop working.

Mon Palae your points are well taken.
Please understand I do not advocate a Missle turret system that would be the ultimate "Can Protect you from Any Missle System" I think it should actually have a tough chance hitting a fast moving incomeing missle maybe destroy 1 in 4.
I just see this as one more way to create options for players it also forces the caracal driver to think about his weapon loadout as much as the Thorax drivers load out.
The reality is when you go into combat with another ship there are many different weapons loads and drone capabilites a player can choose from. Each shoul dhave its avantages and disadvantages to insure balance.
Any system that Guarantees a win in everycombat situation is a bad system design From a GAMEPLAY perspective. "Its all fun and games til somebody gets Podded" |

The Arma and Dom can have missile defense. Smartbombs.

Why not have flak like explosions that have a chance of destroying 2-3 missiles or incoming drones, depending on the ship bonuses and the weapon bonuses the chances can vary and the damage dealt can vary. I hardly ever mind enganging enemy drones, it is easier to destroy the mother craft and disconnect them, but drones always prove as trouble.
