I was trying to scan down a ship last evening. I would scan, find his direction, then as I warped to a system point (roid belt, moon, planet) I would bookmark in a spot in the middle of the warp and then warp back to it to see how much closer i had gotten. I can get quite close by using this method. I found him to be below the normal space lane by about 2 AU's. I dropped a 5 au probe and he did not show up despite several trys. I then used a 10 au probe, still no ship. I picked up everything in a horizontal plane but nothing beyond a 1 au or so vertical plane.
It seems the scanner scans in a sphere but the probes scan in a disc shape.

my experience with probes shows that it correctly scans everything within the "bubble" that shows up in the system view while scanning. perhaps they are in a mission deadspace that is "cloaking" their signature...
the DIRECTIONAL scanner seems to scan in a cone shape of the number of degrees and distance that you have selected, and it points in the direction the CAMERA is facing. it would REALLY NICE if it could display the directional scan coverage area so users could actually see where they are scanning?
probes and the directional scanner will pick up different things. for example, wrecks show up on directional scanner, but probes cannot find them. so it kinda sucks when you forgot to bookmark a deadspace room and the acceleration gates vanishes on you
~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ PvP represents the only danger your ship is in - take that away and it makes the whole flying around bit utterly pointless.
To see the directional scanner's orientation, Press F11 and observe the green cone on the solarsystem browser.
The dead space may explain it. But I had the probe scan several times and it picked up shuttles and abandoned frigs, but it never would pick him out.
Are you sure he isn't cloaked?
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application.

LOL, glad to be of assistance. I was very pleased when I found that myself.

If he was in a deadspace mining a mission or something scan probes only have about a 5% (i think) chance of picking him up and thus he wouldn't turn up.

I've had logged off people almost impossible to scan out.
I tried getting the ships with normal probes, but that didn't work. I had to switch to complex-scan probes to find them. And then it still took 45 minutes.
The complex btw, was not there. Perhaps ex-complex spots still have the deadspace difficulty with them?

He must have been at a complex, that's the only way I can figure he got so far off the normal shipping lanes.
