I know I know, I ask a LOT of tech questions on here but you should take that as a compliment to your intelligence. Now, I just bought four 1gig sticks of DDR 400mhz ram, all by the same company, all the same model. I installed them and my computer was reporting 2800mb of 333mhz ram instead, ok I thought, that may be because of Ntune messing about with my mobo. I uninstall ntune and reset the CMOS and it STILL reports it as 2800mb at 333. I have tested each stick individually and they all report as 400mhz and 1gig. I have a Lanparty NF4 ultra-d motherboard which says it can take upto 4gig of ddr400 ram. Can anyone help? i'm confused ;.;

On 32-bit Windows XP 2.8gb (2.93 technically) is the max amount that it can see

Because you're using a 32-bit operating system.
Either upgrade to a 32-bit operating system that supports memory extensions, like Linux/Unix (some versions can handle up to 16GB or more), or get a 64-bit operating system.

for a 64 bit OS you need a 64 bit processor, Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 +. If you are on a 32-bit only processor, eg. P4 then you will need to get a dual core. DDR400 memory doesn't work with Core 2 Duo's either afaik so unless you are an AMD user I believe you are very much boned.

Edited by: Benco97 on 28/04/2007 23:04:22 Ahem, I'm using Vista 64bit. THAT is the source of my confusion. ANYWAY, it's the Bios, before it's even loaded the OS that is only reporting 2.8gig.

so if u want more then 2.8 gigs u need xp x64 or vista (is that default 32 with a 64 bit version or is it default 64?) I heard there was a lot of driver problems with x64 (as in they are non-existant :|) And games and stuff wont play on them or something? Is this true?
If you can find the drivers for your system is it all set (cause I pretty much only need audio and video drivers I guess :|) Or does each piece of software need to support x64 anyway? I have no desire to upgrade to vista whatsoever :| But I would like x64 (since i have a 64 bit dual core processer ;p)
Also I heard that it runs a lot smoother (probably cause it supports the 64bit :|) but other then the afore mentioned driver problems is there anything wrong with x64? ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)

Vista 32-bit is no different from XP 32-bit in memory; it will have the same limitation.
64-bit advantages: 1. More memory. 2. Programs compiled for 64-bit can access 64-bit registers, doing double precision and long operations much faster. They also have access to twice as many general-purpose 32-bit registers, which can also increase speed considerably. This benefit is much greater on Linux, as on XP/Vista you'll be using mostly 32-bit programs anyways.

Thank you very much for the links, I hadn't thought of updating the bios. However, I have found a new problem ;p Win flash says "Onboard BIOS not Award BIOS!" when I try to run it. Which I find to be odd.

The only real disadvantages are compatibility issues. Most major driver manufacturers have released 64 bit versions by now, but there might still be some devices out there without 64 bit drivers. You won't be able to run any 16 bit programs (older DOS games for example) and some 32 bit programs might give you a hard time (though most run just fine).
64 bit can support up to 16 billion gigabytes of memory, so no problems there for the next hundred years or so

I still havn't been able to work this out, I just don't get it, programs that provide you with information about your system are telling me that I have 4gig of ram but the BIOS and the OS are both telling me I only have 2.8 I have tried contacting DFI (the makers of my motherboard) but that got me nowhere.. Any DIMM or pair of DIMMs in any DIMM slot or pair of DIMM slots (dual or single channel) is working fine, it's only when all four DIMMs are inserted across both channels that it is not reporting all the memory. Could it be something stupid like too little voltage? I doubt it to be honest. I'm using a DFI Lanparty UT-Ultra D motherboard with an AMD athlon 64 3200+ 939 CPU, the DIMMs are all PNY (I know, not a good choice but the only I had available and considering that all sticks are testing fine I don't think that is the problem) 1gig PC3200. Seriously, any help would be much appreciated as this 4gig of ram just cost me ú280.

Have a look around in your bios, should be a section named similar to chipset/memory or something of the like. See if theres a memory mapping/remapping option you can set to 64 bit, some motherboards you have to set manually.

*UPDATE* - Woo, I finally got the thing to flash. First I flashed to the BETA bios which did exactly diddly-squat, nothing. So I then patched to the latest BIOS which seems to have helped a little, It now reads 3040mb of ram on the POST and in the OS. so after two flashes i've gained 200mb of ram, 1gig to go. It also seems to have solved a problem I was having with IRQ addresses. AutoAssault doesn't insta-bluescreen (yup, Vista has bluescreens) when I go on foot now.

Yup, it's my relaxation from EVE. My main is a Biomek Constructor. Eve for thought, planning, strategy and crushing my enemies. Auto assault for blowing stuff up at 80mph. I've had an account since it's Beta but I hardly played it then and have only recently started again.
