I was wondering.
For the new player who is still getting the feel of flying a cruiser, are there any tips and tricks to exploring the 0.4 to 0.0 regions?
My approach thus far has been in taking my Thorax to reconnaissance .9 to .5 space prior to going in with my mining ship. The only difference I have seen is that the caliber of asteroid pirates increases.
What can one expect upon entering .4 space and below?
What kinds of ships are likely to be first contact?
What tactics are common greetings for first time explorers?
How should one equip to be moderately able to deal with the trip?
And lastly, would a lone ship scouting ahead be better than traveling in a group from the outset?
Understanding is the first step of exploration and I would appreciate any insight anyone cares to offer.

0.0 unless bubble camped is safe - if its alliance space expect the former
0.1-0.4 expect pirates - thing is most of them roam around ganking miners and autopilot guys
fit 2x warp stab if you are not there to rat and make sure you got nice tank and you will get by fine
if you want to fight its really just being able to kill before you get 5v1 instead of 1v1

Just always keep your eyes open and pay attention to the local channel - if all the sudden alot of people enter the system it's usually bad news. Whenever you rat always be ready to run if you see someone else and use a ship setup that lets you defend against players too. Or make friends. :) <sig> IBTL! IBDS! IBTC! 1st in a BoB Post! Thats allmost all there is to it, better rats, slightley better ore that is not worth mining for the amount of risk involved, and complex's up to 5/10. If you want to rat, or want to run a deserted 5/10 complex then its worth going, for mining don't bother.
I'd say scout in a shuttle insted of your rax, it takes ages for a battleship to lock a shuttle, and they go to warp pritty much instantley, if you jump in and there is a BS camp, do not try to slowboat back to the gate, warp to the next gate, or a planet, whatever and either continue your journey or warp back to the gate at zero to get out.
- What can one expect upon entering .4 space and below?
Gatecamps - allmost allways in Battleships, and there locking time will be quicker than you think!
- What kinds of ships are likely to be first contact?
Again most likeley gate camping pirates in BS's at the gate, anything go's in the belts.
- What tactics are common greetings for first time explorers?
Ganking with excessive amounts of firepower.
- How should one equip to be moderately able to deal with the trip?
If you going to a system with a station, i'd say scout in a shuttle, when you think its safe to move your main ship fit WCS in lows, shield extenders in high or mabey ECM just incase there are more gatecampers than there are lowslots on your ship, of course you could fight back... but in most cases that would be futile.
- And lastly, would a lone ship scouting ahead be better than traveling in a group from the outset?
Do both, be in a group and have someone in a shuttle go one jump ahead.

This is all valuable information.
I see it often said that people need to get out of Empire but I, like many I know, simply donĘt know how. The new player works very hard for skills and ISK to buy ships so the prospect of loss is quite keen. Blundering about blindly is not a comfortable thought when one is flying an expensive new ship among experienced players with nice guns.
As example, had I jumped into a gate and met with a trap, it would not have occurred to me to warp to the next gate.. I would have likely sat there aligning in an effort to jump out where I came in.
Knowledge is the great enabler and this is the kind of information I search for most days at this site. I hope to see more discussions of tactics and ideas for the new explorer. I think there are many who look for basic strategy in beginning their explorations.
Thank you,

and no mine isnt hiring...
