No I'm not gonna ask if EVE is gonna come out on the PS3.
With the PS3's option to install another OS on the hdd, I was wondering if anyone has installed linux and played EVE on it and if it works and if so, how well. It would be awesome to see eve on my new tv.
Anyone?

Now that would be interesting to see. I won't pay Sony a penny to get a Ps3 to find out, but sounds like a fun project nonetheless.

Well I got a new PS3 this weekend and I'm pondering trying it.

I could do that, but then it wouldn't be novel... and I'd have to move the pc from my room.

i looked into it, and you MAY be able to get it to load, (with several OS add ons for linux) but you will get less than 1fps as the hardware in the ps3, although a good spec cannot cope with this type of application needs, built for different systems.

PS3 to linux (I believe they have got Linux running on a PS3).
Linux to windows via an emulation program.
In that session run Eve.
Done.
But I bet it would run like ass.
And Eve is setup for mouse operation, unless you can get a mouse on a PS3 it wont be worth it, cause the controls would be ass.

Wine won't run on the type of processor that's in the PS3. It's a PowerPC (or very close) and afaik Wine code requires an x86 processor specifically. More here:
Wine FAQ
However, as noted here you could get something working via an x86 emulation environment, but you'd be looking at a slideshow most probably. I've not looked closely at this, bit there might be something here:

I'm pretty certain 3D acceleration doesn't work in Linux on the PS3 ... so it's likely EVE won't load at all.
Just theorycrafting tho : )

WINE IS NOT AN EMULATOR.
Hell, that is what WINE stands for. But people keep thinking that it is, and I don't know why.
WINE does not magically convert x86 instructions to PowerPC instructions. It does not convert instructions at all. All it does is provide libraries and emulated system calls so that a Windows program can run on a non-Windows operating system.

Isn't that what a forum is for? or should we all go around and read every article ever wrote on any subject before asking questions about it

Thanks, I thought I had to say that but then you were here first.
As for PS3 it uses IBM's Cell processor, yeah maybe close to PowerPC but not quite, since WINE (which isn't an emulator btw) is open-source and some GCC libraries should be available for the PS3 you can easily compile it for your architecture, one of the countless cool things about open-source. I don't know about 3D acceleration but since nothing's emulated there shouldn't be any problems if Xorg properly setup.

You can compile WINE for the PS3, maybe, but you can't compile EVE for it

Why would you want to play EVE on a PS3 anyway? Do you enjoy making your life more difficult? Do you have a guilty conscience that begs you to punish yourself?
EVE on PS3 via Linux = flagellation.

personally i'd sell the ps3 buy a 360 then you can use that as an input/display device to play eve on your tv and have it actually running on your pc in an-other part of the house across a network.
note: lots of windows media centre hacks required to trick it into thinking specific applications are actually video streams to be sent out across the lan. it is possible however since i use word and firefox on the 360 downstairs when they're actually running on media server upstairs

As others have said not only is the Playstation 3 crude compared a good computer, its not a x86 architecture thus cannot work.
