Hi all,
I have just started playing again after a year or so, and didn't play that much to start with. I have decided piracy is what I will look at first, as it seems to be where the fun lies in the game for me.
I have read all the guides on the forums, and feel am up to speed on all the usual beginner stuff. So far my record is poor, and was hoping that someone could point out what I may be doing wrong.
Ship ==== RIFTER 3 x 125mm Autocannons (2 x EM ammo, 1 x Depleted Uranium) 1 x Standard Missile Launcher (Sabretooth missile) 1 x MWD or Afterburner 1 x Warpcore Scrambler 1 x Webber 3 x Capacitor rechargers of some sort... I forget what they're called.
Plan ==== I dive in to low sec space. If I enter a system I've not been to before I set up a couple of safe spots, then ***** open the scanner and start looking for targets. I am confident my scanning skills are up to par, in high sec space I can find targets quickly. Most of the time while hunting however I believe the ships I am scanning are at safe spots as I cannot pin them down to a warpable loctations.
So far I have only found three ships in low sec space with the following results:
1) Forgot to lock on to the target before they warped away. <--- n00b 2) The what I now know was a POS blew me away. 3) The other pirate took me down before I could get his shield off.
Am I doing things right, and just need to keep at it, or are there things I could be doing differently? How many systems will I need to be searching before finding a target, roughly? So far I have been cruising around 5 or so, is that too few?
When I was killed by the other pirate, I was disapointed in how poorly my setup performed. He was in a Frig too, although I forget what it was. I locked on quick smartish and got the old guns going in good time. I was orbiting at the correct range, so am happy there was not much missing from my personal performance. What sort of thing could make such a large difference in this sort of fight?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Edited by: Major Stormer on 01/05/2007 08:07:42 Rifter is a nice ship, this is what I used:
3x125 or 150mm autocannons, all emp. (change ammo if attacking armor tankers) 1x small nos
1x afterburner, warp disruptor (20k) webber
small armor rep, 200mm plate (i think it was 200, if you can fit bigger do, e.g 400), gyrostab for rof and damage.
orbit at very close range, rep if you have to :)

sorry to say but its hard to decide where to start on your mistakes.
maybe start with the most obvious:
what do you want to kill in an untanked, poor dps frigate?
yeah basically nothing but other newbies who dont know how to fit their frigates.
for the guns you should use pahsed plasma and/or fusion as EMP is a bad ammo choice. it does EM and EXPL damage which either makes you git 60% expl shield resist or 70% em armor resist. long range ammo like depleted is useless as your range is msotly based on the unmodified fallof of autocannons.
next: the standard missile launcher isnt wroth he grid. loose it and upgrade guns to 200mm and/or maybe fit a roket launcher.
use an afterburner as the mwd kills you in 2 ways: a) your cap b) your guns dont hit orbiting at 2km @ 1km/s.
for the lows you want to fit a tank (small repair, plate/damage controll) and a gyrostabilizer.
at the moment your setup looks like you want to do "speedtank and kill faster than beeing killed yourself". nice idea but another rifter with 3 200mm (t2) and 3 gyrostabilizer (t2) can really blast you out of the skies before you punch trough his shields.
if you want to start pirating in that small ships you should look for a corp/gang to support you. one frig is weak, 10 frigs are scary...

Edited by: Sahjahn on 01/05/2007 08:47:33 you could always try a passive shield rifter
3 x 200mm autocannons (best ya can afford) 1 x Medium F-S9 Shield Extender/Med Shield Extender II 1 x Cold-Gas arcjet thrusters 1 x 20km scrammer 3x Shield Power Relays.
the 1500 shield HP just might give you the edge in a frig vs frig battle, but you're resists will be crap.

Dont bother with the making of safespots tbh your prey will be gone when you made your 1st or 2nd safespot.
Try find your target as fast as possible.
You can always make on safespot while warping from the stargate to planet you are scanning from.
Pirating is indeed hard these days and I dont think youll get that far in a frig.

Holy flying crap.
I pirated for 3 months in rifters and did just great.
Solo frigate flying is awesome fun. However expect to make up to 100 jumps while wondering for targets.
EMP is useful against people shield tanking, otherwise different damage types is needed.
Just explore and have fun :) Remember to keep a fast tight orbit so you dont get hit.
Its not all gatecamping people!

That is beyond terrible. I don't even know where to start, but first I ahve to point out that no chance in hell will you be able to run your 20k scram, let alone the ab, for more than one cycle with 3 SPR's. That's just.... no. christ. die in a fire.
Moving along... what I fly 90% of the time: 3 x 150mm AC's, 1 small nos ab, 7.5 scram, web (or second scram, depending on target) small rep II, damage control, 200mm tungsten/crystalline plate
wont let ya down, decently cheap and loads of fun.
Alternate high slot setup is a rocket launcher in place of the nos, with a cap relay in place of the damage control, less skill intensive to fit, more skill intensive to manage cap use from the repper. If you bother to train engineering past 3 you can fit 200mm AC's in place of the 150's as I recall. But I can't be bothered to do that, so i'm not sure
And by the way, I rule you.

Hi there.
As you start off pirating. You will get killed. Lots. Get used to it.
The rifter is a nice ship and a good fit would be:
x3 150mm auto cannons with EMP x1 small nosferatu x1 war scrambler x1 1mn afterburner x1 webber x1 gyrostabiliser x1 200mm plate x1 small armour repairer
The standard rifter setup in my opinion. I have had many kills using the above setup and almost killed a BC in it solo and took part (x2 frigates) in BS kills.
Reading all the stuff in the forum helps but keep at it and learn from your mistakes. The loss you took from the other pirate was partly down to the fit on your ship. Your low-slots are not optimal since you are not shield tanking. However, the fit of your ship is only part of it.
Experience counts too. You probably didn't recognise that the other ship was going to reduce you to scrap until it was too late. No shame in running you know?
Anyway, get your skills up (minmater frig V, small projectile turret v, afterburner IV etc) and keep at it.
When I first started I was killed about a dozen times before I figured out a few things.
You'll get your kills and then you should be hooked.

You have the idea, though as others have said, fit a tank :P
5 systems may indeed be too low... in a frigate you can check more systems than that quite quickly. It should be a little easier once you have found a good route, although finding good targets for a frigate is usually tougher than actually fighting the battles.

Yep, tis a nice setup, gyro could be replaced by a damage control if you need more tank. So some times I use gyro some times damage control, for a AC setup anyway.
Also your ammo best not to cross it like that EMP obviously works best for shield tanking targets, so bring along a few different types and switch depending on your target

EMP, Fusion, and Phased Plasma are all you'll ever need (well, barrage of course once you have T2 guns). EMP for general purpose and shields, fusion for meaty armor tankers (there really needs to be enough of a ship to shoot at to justify the switch time) , and phased plasma for T2 amarr ships and anything you know in advance is heavily tanked to explosive/kin (npcers/missions with angels/rogue drones)
And by the way, I rule you.

Best rifter fit ever. 400mm plate means you have 1600+ armor which is huge on a frig. And you still should have enough grid to fit a rocket launcher in your 4th top (hey, free damage is nice).

Absolutely, getting your corp doing a fun frigate gang is amazing, ATHIS had 1 the other day T2 frigates ofc, but we did some very nice pwnage & came back in time to join in on 2 Eos & a Cane.. very nice/fun fights indeed

I'd be surprised if any pirates in eve could say that all those 3 haven't happened to them in their early days. i know they did to me.

This alt can haul both loot and new gear for when your sec status drops a lot.
Later on the alt can be progressed to flying a cloaked, mwd,wcs hauler, or a scanning hauler (think suicide ganking). The cloaked hauler is to monitor the other side of the gate to make sure you don't get jumped. That and if you are camping a 0.0 chokepoint it can be used to haul large loot dropped from space pinatas.
It's funny because it's true. "If you had a gang of 81127 kestrals you could alpha strike Tranquility Server into a smoking hole in the ground" |
