How are you going to scam-proof it?
Most people use something like the National Lottery Bonus Ball (or equivalent) so that everyone can be sure that you didn't just choose your friend/alt to win.

Good luck with your new mini-profession :)
Yet, as Jessickah pointed, for reasonably trustable lotteries you should establish two things:
1) Tamper-proofness: Use such model where the host canno't pick his alt as winner even if he wanted (check how other lotteries in this forum have done it through RL lotteries or DJ indexes)
2) Scam-assurances: Please reveal also your main character, people might be more eager to trust in you and participate if your reputation at stake is worth more than those 400M you could run with.
Also just for convenience, considering commenting something on: - When the lottery will be drawn / When is the last day to participate? - What happens if all tickets are not sold?

Ok first, my main as i mentioned is Commander Predator, if all tickets are not sold within 3 weeks every ticket will be refunded.
for drawing i use a random number generator
www.random.org
to be honest, 400mil isnt that much to me i can make that much in a day if i really tried, so scamming 400mil and giving my main a bad reputation isnt worth it.i will look into the (anti-scam) thing your telling me about so i hope this answers your questions for now.

I would definately like to play this one as having three prizes seems like an excellent idea.
However could you not just sell 49 tickets, rather than 50, and then you could link it to the UK lotto draw and have the prizes given to the first three numbers picked on the main draw. Or whatever lotto game is local to your timezone so you can watch it yourself and note down the order the numbers are drawn in.
This totally tamper-proofs the draw as the results are independantly verifiable by anyone who cares to do so.
Now would be a good time to make the change too, as you haven't sold any tickets yet :)

What i do is i use the random integer part of the website, it brings up a list of all the numbers you want, 1-50 1-100 or even 5-500000 or whatever you want. the first three numbers when i do the drawing are the winners. i would set it 1-50 obviously you can try and test it out yourself there is no way i can tamper with it to have someone i want to win, win.

The problem is that using a random number generator is not scam secure. For example, you could have an alt buying ticket #10. When it comes to drawing, you can just refresh random.org as often as you need until #10 shows up. Nobody can ever verify which number was really drawn. With a real lottery drawn by a third party, this can't happen.

i have no reason to scam thus no intention of scamming.
after 5 rounds i would make more than 400mil....its kinda easy to see if the same person wins 5 times ina row and also lets say i did have a reason to scam.... theres still gonna be 2 other winners. the chances of random.org coming up with 3 numbers i pick in a row are like 1 for ever 5 million i hit the refresh button. i really dont have time to sit and wait for three numbers i want to pop up

In case you _want_ to increase your profit from the lottery, let me kindly offer some tips.
1) Instead of really using www.random.org, save time by claiming it gave numbers you needed (and should your want to provide screenshots from it, I can sell you a script to get required numbers without work from your part).
2) When selecting winners, do give some prizes to known forum figures or random people, and only give say 50% to your alts. Remember to recycle the alts you use.
2a) You could also implement 'only Xxx ticket per char' rule, which would give plausible explanation why so many people use alts (or rather why so many alts win)
That is, instead of just keeping say 10% margin as profit, you could also get say 50% from total pool without losing your reputation.
If you so wanted.
You know that you are running honest lottery and don't want those extra profits, but some would-be participants might want to be assured that you _couldn't_ do it.

Edited by: Lord WarATron on 09/05/2007 10:24:50 True Heikki. Thats the problem with lotteries - if you try to make it fair, then nobody is intrested. And if you try to run a fair lottery, then the hassel is not really worth it (unless you are doing a free lottery, to build up reputation)
A long time ago I attempted to start a honest lottery. In it I had numbers picked in advance, but double encrypted and made available via web download so nobody could claim I was scamming. People suggested that it would be better if I change it to a real life number system (NY Lottery, in fact, I think it was you Heikki) and I changed it accordingly.
But the irony was, I was running a professional lottery next to a obvious scam lottery run by a 5 day old alt. Yet the 5 day old alt lottery had dozens of people snapping up tickets and mine had sold only a few. It was then I relised the perceived value - fill up a lottery thread with alts buying pretend tickets, then people follow a crowd like sheep and end up buying!
In the end, I had something like 300mil in tickets sold. I called off the lottery and returned every penny thanking everyone who had taken part. Moral of the story - If a lottery is genuinly honest - Then the profit is not worth the hassle of running one. If a lottry is free - just make sure the person is not building up rep for a future scam

As you later noted, reckon the issue is that you must either have interesting product, or very efective marketting (like alts spamming). Hence running lotteries is tough business; kind of believe there is market only for few succesful lottery authors.
Originally by: Lord WarATron I had something like 300mil in tickets sold
Which indeed far more than most lotteries seem to collect, especially if we ignore assumed alt-advertising tickets.
So for general lottery guidelines: - Make it interesting one (special price, size, theme, etc) - Select prize pool corresponding to worth of your reputation and budget (no point trying to run 10B lottery with trial alt) - Pick tamper-proof method (based on public ticket numbers and DowJones index or national lotteries) - Advertise (have friends to participate, give people reason to post often on the thread, or what ever you come up with)
Apparently those are not perfect guides since I half-failed with them. About a year ago I tried to follow them in my lottery, but even then got only 20% of 6B target point.
