I'm really new to this game and still learning the basics. So far it's a pretty large learning curve for me, but you gotta start somewhere.
I'm getting into cruisers soon and wanted some advice on a decent Caracal setup. I wouldn't be so ignorant to say I want a pvp setup, but maybe a nice small gang defensive setup. Isk isn't a problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Great game and thanks for your help!

High: right-click Mid: sell Low: buy new ship
Seriously, if you want a defensive setup, the Caracal is not your ship. You have good range and can avoid damage that way, but it's still a paper-thin ship. If any serious pvp opponent gets into range of you, you're a killmail.

So, what would you suggest then for a cruiser?

Something along the lines of this:
5x Assault missile launcher (or Heavy if it fits) 2x Large extender, 2-3x Hardener, 0-1, Warp disruptor 0-2 BCU, 0-2 PDU (if you need them to make it fit)

Nothing wrong with a Caracal for a PVP ship. Don't go fitting it with loads of expensive T2 and faction equipment though. Consider it to be a somewhat expendable PVP ship and you'll be happy with it. The sort of thing where you keep 4 of them already fitted out identically in the same station where your clone is.
Right, stick Heavies in the highs, some LSE and resists in the mids, and PDS and BCU in the lows as needed, and go and kill (or be killed).
Bring a tackling buddy along though, cuz if you have to fit for tackling your tank will totally suck.

While paper thing may be true of the Caracal, it is still good for small/medium/large gangs. Larger ships usually get targeted first as do the small tacklers. I use: (5) heavies (1) MWD (2) Sensor boosters Fit whatever else in mids Lows either nanos or Istabs Guaranteed to get you on a lot more killmails then deathmails.

5x Xt-2800 heavy assault missile launchers, or better. Terror assault missiles
20km Scram 2x Best named med extenders 2x Named invufields
2x Named ballistic control units
Hobgoblins, t1 will do.
Maimed rapier with that, solo.

That's what I was going for. Dont want to deck it out because it's just a cruiser and I plan on dying a few times. Why plan on dying? Well, you gotta put yourself in the sh*t sometimes to smell the roses.
How come my portrait isnt showing up?

Oh, it's definitely a good ship, and given a bad name by the newbies who abuse it. It's just not at all suited for a defensive setup like the poster asked for. The Caracal's only defense is not getting hit at all, even the "tank" setups will still go down very quickly if they start taking hits.
To answer your question about other ships, the Maller is the obvious answer for a tank ship, or you might look at the various 1600mm plate cruiser setups.

A Caracal fitted with all assault launchers firing standards, sensor booster, AB and a decent web can see off a lot of frigate set-ups. I've tried heavy assaults but to be honest the ship is so damn slow that getting into range can be tough. Once you get used to the Caracal... consider the Drake as the next step. ------------------------------------------------

Even new players can extend the shield of the Caracal and fit some nice assault launchers... But for taking on cruiser+ I recommend active tank and HAMs
Only Downside to Caracal is the very short fights - It will not take other ships long to put you in a pod unless you can kill them fast... And that is no matter how you tank it. - I'm a nice guy!! and OMG I love Team Tuxford for the speedbalancing... |

Caracal issue...
It can't pick on any good cruiser pilot, it just can't. U will lack dps or will die too fast, and still lack dps BUT weak pvp with caracal is a tradeoff for best pve cruiser in game, so ppl need to get over with it and stop trying to pvp in caracal. Just fly a kestrel :P ---

HAMS are just wrong for the very reason that being in close to another ship is the Caracals deathknell. With Scourge heavies (outdamges all the other resist type missiles) you can be 90k from the target and hitting him. How many other cruisers can hit that far off? Distance is the Caracals friend.

How much PvP is 1 vs 1 any more? In a small gang where 1 ship is a tackler, the Caracal has a place....but not up close.
