Lab rental fees are a joke - 1000 ISK for a few days of time is nothing. It's the sole reason for why we are seeing all the labs in empire space booked up while factory slots (which are usually 50 times more expensive) are plentiful.
It should be increased for enhanced industry gameplay!

I've never had trouble finding labs in empire space.

Stop looking in high-sec empire space for labs, there are some in lower sec stations. It ain't over till the fat lady falls on ya!

This is what I meant. Lab fees should be raised to free up labs. It would free up labs in the first place because no one was really using them, just hogging them since it costs close to nill doing so.

Nightfang obviously wasn't around for the lab space crisis that began 5 days after release and lasted 3 months.

I think all the labs are rented because people are doing research on their BPs whereas people aren't doing production 24/7. I had a factory in a very popular location and I needed to run one batch of ammo every 3 days to keep my slot. After I moved to a station that had a bunch of open factories I switched to just renting a slot when I needed to run a production job.
It would still be worth it to me to keep my lab slots even if the prices were 50x more. I don't think raising prices would stop people from doing mineral research or running off BPCs. ----------------------------------------- Sig rented by Drethen Nerevitas. |

Care to enlighten me? Because right now it seems we have a mild version of the same problem around high sec areas (though steps have already been taken to improve matters).
As to Lola - I too would pay considerable amounts just to keep a lab slot in, let's say, Luminaire. Thing is that when they are as cheap as they are now, I have virtually nothing to lose from hogging all the lab slots within 10 jumps from the above system say would I just take the time to maintain them all.
Higher fees would take care of the worst of this, while still not affecting the most sought after locations.

Prices should indeed be related on popularity. But that should also be the case for offices.
I think a good way could be if people could buy out other players's factory and research slots and their offices.

If you lease an office on a station, it should come with a number of slots IMO.
Say, 5 of each. Or maybe depending on the size of your corp. (Those slots allocated to your corp would not take away from the publicly available ones)

Increase all prices on facilities according to the number of current slots free.. if zero keep raising the price.. and lower it again at speed according to available space.. Supply Demand model for this is a sourly missed thing.. To many just keep infinite slots for no reasons at all.. and its a bad spiral.. because noone dares let slots go till there is a trustworthy system, like the one described above.. SO CCP please put this high on the list so the world starts acting like the real world.. going to war over facilities could be on the horizon, and that would simply be lame..

The fee has absolutely nothing to do with how many slots are being rented. Obtaining isk is not a problem with this game and raising the rental fee is only going to make it harder for the little guy to afford the lab. The big guys will have no trouble paying the fee and will pay the fee no matter the cost. What's important is having the lab, not necessarily how much the rental fee costs. Corps with many blueprints, like myself, need several slots to research the bp's to remain competative. If you want to free up the need for slots, I'd suggest reducing research time to lower the demand for the labs, but that's not going to happen either.

From a personal persective, my corp has as many slots in use as each member can run right now because it takes 5-10 days per trivial blueprint to get to an acceptable efficiency level and it takes days to get a single ME level on a ship blueprint. As a result we have a huge backlog of blueprints that need research to produce profitably and will end up consuming a number of research slots for quite some time until all the ammo, missile and gun/launcher blueprints are processed, at which point we will probably have more new blueprints and the cycle will continue. We had to find an out of the way station to get research slots and occassionly waste time flying back there to manage the slots and have had to wait for them to become available in some cases.
Production time per ship is only hours, thus we can produce faster than we can sell/use and only rent factory slots and have it produce as much we are ready to over the 5 day rental period we have it and then let it go but end up renting a research slot for 5 days for every 3 mineral efficiency levels we go for on a ship BP.
One thing that does not help matters right now is the extremely high price of megacyte and zydrine. As a result, we are researching blue prints that use them to much higher efficiency levels than we might otherwise because getting the mega and zydrine requirements to zero waste has a huge impact on the production cost and can save a lot of money since we are dependent on the market for our supplies of it.
Cost per lab slot won't change anything, if anything it will just force prices for end consumers higher or put people out of business and out of game. It is already tough to recoup the cost of many of the blueprints out there through legitimate sales because market prices for a lot of things are not that far above cost. In fact I have actually purchased some items from market and recycled them for ore because the they were worth more in ore than people wanted for them because supply was so excessive.
