The following is from the EVE Knowledge base.
----------- A Fleet Commander will grant his leadership bonuses to all members in the fleet that have an active squadron and wing in the same system as the Fleet Commander. Note the Fleet Commander does not have an active squadron or wing so he does not get his own bonuses. -----------
WTF!!!! Why would anybody want to after spending months not get "any" bonuses, even his own, to sit in fleet command? OR has this been changed and not updated in the knowledgebase?
WTF!! Plz explain!

Edited by: Maefly on 07/05/2007 19:11:40 Any leadership position in the fleet does not get his own bonuses. Squad commanders don't get their own bonuses either. I think each squad commander gets the wing commanders bonuses and wing commander gets fleet commander bonuses but I am unsure if they trickle down and stack.
The point of training them up is so that the fleet gets the bonuses....and of course the epeen wagging that inevitably occurs when the FC asks "ok, who here has leadership lvl5" and the rabble-rabble of Teamspeak responses "I have Wing commander lvl 1, I have lvl 2, I have WC lvl 73849275" - all the while the enemy fleet is flanking and then wtfbbqpwnage.
Oh and did I mention the fleet skills are great for lag when your fleet jumps in and the system needs to recalc all the bonuses.

actually it's when you uncloak, so it recalculates the whole thing for each person who uncloaks. I'm not sure if it only does this for people in that gang or for everybody who's in system or ongrid. --- - We lost that fight - Quick, smack'em in local or they'll think they won! |

As I stated before.. .why does the fleet commander NOT get his own bonuses but wing commanders do?
From the following page: https://support.eve-online.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=166
# A Fleet Commander will grant his leadership bonuses to all members in the fleet that have an active squadron and wing in the same system as the Fleet Commander. Note the Fleet Commander does not have an active squadron or wing so he does not get his own bonuses. # A Wing Commander will grant his leadership bonuses to all members of his wing, including himself. # A Squadron Commander will grant his leadership bonuses to all members of his squadron, including himself.
----------
So, what you two just said is wrong, even wing and squad get their own bonuses.. so why do the fleet not? Kinda lame if you ask me!!!

You've almost got it right.... Fleet Commanders Can give out bonuses to one Wing per level of Fleet Command. Wing Commanders can give out bonuses to one Squad per level of Wing Command. Squad Commanders can give out bonuses to 2 Squad Members per level of Leadership.
Bonuses will accumulate the highest number in the chain for those who are in Squads. As was posted, Wing and Squad commanders are supposed to get their own bonuses.
But yeah... it is cheesy for the Fleet Commaner to not get any bonuses.
On the other hand, you get to do fun stuff like warp your entire Fleet to an enemy pos to get wasted, or handle invites for the whole fleet cuz you get lazy Wing and Squad commanders, or spend all your time moving people around because a Squad Commander died and logged and all his Squad is no longer getting bonuses.

Well I guess if you have a fleet large enough that you actually need a fleet commander, then the effects of all the bonuses he's giving out to so many ships are probably much greater than his individual contribution in the fight could be.
Most generals don't kill many enemy soldiers. They focus on directing units and countering enemy strategy rather than engaging in combat themselves.

Well, I haven't tested it lately, but fleet commanders DID get there own bonuses. I don't yet have the skills to run a fleet, so I run wings or squads, and those commanders clearly DO get their own bonuses (just did it Sunday). Its been a couple of months since I tested the bonuses for the Fleet Commander though.

But thats not the point, you spend 3 months of skill training to just sit in fleet command and don't get anything from it?
Why not just stop at wing commander and "get" the bonuses. I mean, who wants to spend time on skills and not profit from it in some waY?

You do get something from it. You get to command a fleet of dozens of ships which are significantly more powerful because of your contribution. Assuming you're in a command ship with 3 (or even 4? Is that possible?) warfare links, and have level 4 or 5 in the appropriate skills, and a mindlink implant, your fleet will be a LOT faster and tougher because of you.
True, you won't get any killmails. If that's what's important to you, you should be training for skills to be a combat soldier, not a fleet commander. But giving multiple advanced gang bonuses to 40 or 50 ships will make for more difference than any ship short of a super-capital could. You will be welcome in any large PvP alliance with that skillset. You will also be a primary target, since destroying your ship will inflict a huge blow to your fleet. Avoiding PvP should be a priority for a fleet commander.

Fleet Command ships, despite their small gang tanking capabilities are fragile, especially when running command links. Its in fact very easy to kill them in fleet situations. Ironically, the added effect of most of the fleet modules decreases greatly as gang size increases. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Good point. Sustaining that huge cap drain means that you're all but helpless in any serious fight. The more reason for a Command-ship flyin' FC not to delude himself that he should be pewpewing.
