So my alt tried the always revered smartbomb jita 4-4 but as soon as I hit the button to activate my smarties all that happened was I got a message saying that they couldn't within 5k of a station or stargate. So instead of seeing glorious explosions and a plummeting sec status, i got nothing. How long has this been in effect?

At least a year. Can't activate within 5k of stations or gates.

Different stations have different hitboxes. Some of the hitboxes in this game are so bumble****** that tbh it's hard to believe (POS for example).

I know for a fact that smartbombs work after undocking from an outpost. Much to the distress of the nearby enemy interdictor and tackle ships.

I tried activating regular large smartbombs outside the Minmatar player Outpost and outside the Gallente capturable station.
None worked.
The trick here are the officer smart bombs that extend beyond the 5km range (so you can be further than 5km from station, but your ~10km range still reaches the station.
I also know that several MC motherships were temp banned for smartbombing the undock point. Not sure if there is something about officer smartbombs that lets them be activated within the 5km radius or they were sitting more than 5km from station but within the smartbomb range. Either way, that was bannable.
Also, when ER had a "partying party" in Jita at gate with smartbombing BSes, they got a warning from GM for "intentionally causing lag", so careful with that too.

the 5km thing is wrong, its actually just the distance your smartbomb covers, so if you do 7.5k, you have to be more than 7.5k away from a gate/station etc to use it -.-
