looking for some insight as to how one should proceed through the ranks of mining ships. right now we have a small crew (3-4) of people who are doing mid-to-high security mining just for fun. at some point we want to go lower.
im running an Osprey with 3 Miner 2's on it right now. im training for Mining Barges and am 8 days out from being able to use a Retriever. i read the mining guide and got a little confused as to where to go next.
Dominix - good for solo lowsec mining? Class 2 Ore Ships - good for lowsec group mining?
any input is appreciated.

one of you should go battleship, while everyone else goes barge. That way he can take out the rats.

If a battleship would require long training (15d or more), then don't do it (at least, don't do it if you're only getting it for mining). A Covetor also takes quite long to train, but its yield is significantly above that of any battleship, even the Rokh (the best BS miner around nowadays).
And the only thing that beats a Covetor on regular ore is a Hulk.

With your mining skills 4 and above, your osprey will out mine the first two barges. (reteiver with SM IIS will out mine it, but not SM Is) You can go to a covie, you will be depending on yer drones for protection. They are slow as anything. But are mining monsters. Then save up 100s of millions for a hulk

I would disagree. A retriever with skills to 4 and barge to 3 will do 20% more than Osprey, at least that's my experience from changing to retriever.
However an Osprey can tank and kill rats down to 0.1 when set up properly. A group of 3 ospreys can defend veery well with assault launchers and drones.

Edited by: Atherus Shadowstorm on 09/05/2007 14:10:12 Basically t1 barges are usable in low sec but not without a reasonable escort ship.
For solo low sec id personally use a dominix (despite owning a covetor which is vastly better yield wise) Since T1 barges have practically no tank at all and no defence worth mentioning (5 drones with no bonuses)
Where as domi on other hand can still tank and mine at the same time, wile having bonused drones to defend it
In short: low secGroup: barge + escort low sec Solo: domi
On a side-note It is worth training for exhumers now, as the Hulk prices are in freefall right now. The main reaon being a hulk can tank in 0.0 no problem from what ive heard with the right fitting, and it outmines everything in the game by a long way. Allowing you no solo-mine low sec no trouble admittedly its probably a long way off for you but something to aim for in the future if you're serious about mining.

What he says. Our 0.0 mining ops work this way.
One Mining-Domi warps in to permatank the rats. Then the barges warp in and clear the belt.
Some haulers carry away the stuff. Works fine.
