Think I am going to need to add salvaging to my list of skills to purchase and get. I am no where near ready/able to afford a BC
I did want to add that this has been an invaluable thread for a newer player such s myself. Thank you all!

a Caracal with 1 or 2 Large Extenders is a rather common sight, it works really well since the HP boost
I wasn't around for the HP boost - but, in its most basic terms wasn't HP increased on most ships?
If so I don't see why extenders became more effective with it, they still add the same amount of HP (or were they boosted as well?). Which patch was this btw?
Yes, all ships had their HPs boosted.
For the Caracal specifically, that meant that it went from a "wet paper bag" shield amount to a "somewhat decent" shield amount. Add to that a couple of Extenders, and suddenly that ship that could not tank a noobship has a really nice amount of shield HPs, a cruiser's shield regeneration and a couple of slots for hardeners.
Before that, most Caracal setups had an AB to try to stay outside the range of the enemy, and a Small/Medium Booster to try to keep the shield up while you moved out of range ... worked, but badly, much better now.

I am one of the worst offenders of getting into a ship too fast. Im at less than 5 mil skill points flying a Raven. However I have been very specific about the skills I need and have my shields tech 2 so my Raven tanks activily nearly as good as you can in one. (Except I'm just getting into shield rigging now so there's lots of room for improvement). My cruises are tech 1 tho. My range is under the accepted 165 km needed to be a sniper in a "pro" gang.
My Drake is more completely tech 2 and I feel much safer in it for obvious reasons (including the soon to be nerfed passive tank). While flying the Drake I chat and occasionally run to the kitchen for a drink without worrying too much. I don't stare at local as much. Thats because its cheaper to replace (even with the tech 2 gear), tougher, and less of a target. Every pirate goes "Oh, look at the juicy Raven." The Drake not so much.
However in a gang we did a for fun (a frigate and cruiser op) I couldn't warp across large systems. Guess who has warp operation only to lvl 2?
I need fitting mods to get 7 tech 2 missile launchers plus 3 LSE II on my Drake. Guess who needs to get weapon upgrades to V and START training advanced weapon upgrades?
Yea, its boring to wait for ships and train skills.
But it will catch up to you. You will get majorly embarrased someday when your no longer a newbie but you have major gaps in your skills. You will have to wait and train skills THEN as opposed to now.
Just have fun but play smart. Balance training against boredom.
To those who think you have to have 12 mil SP before flying a BS well you're a little compulsive.
To those flying BC after a month, you're a little impulsive.
Everyone's welcome in EvE tho. Remember, if some of us impulsive ones did not present targets for you PvPers, what fun would that be?
Nice thread!

On a side note or one of the biggest things I had to learn going from the Omen/Maller to the Proph/Harb was my turning took longer and I was slower. This really sux if you are not aligned properly to a warp point and in my case Armor was almost gone.
Also, everybody mentioned don't get the ship until you can afford to lose it. Remember to get the best insurance you can on it as this will cover the cost of the ship and if you are using Tech 1 gear some of that as well.
