Heyas,
Just wondering if there's a way to quickly access the cargo of wrecked ships. Right now i have to fly close to ship (1.5km) to access the cargo and see what i can loot on it. It takes forever when you have to move from a ship to another that's 50 kms away or something.

You can use Tractor Beams.

Yes, tractor beams are your friends in this case. I've taken to doing my mission, dropping bookmarks at each location where you have wrecks or cans, and then going to grab a second ship specifically set up with tractor beams and salvagers. I normally use a much smaller ship fitted specifically for that role so that i can move fast and get it over with.
Some folks turn in the mission before going to get the cans/ wrecks and some dont. It's a personal preference.
Hope that helps?

Thanks for the replies.
I guess i could use a Condor for this matter. I just started like 4 days ago and not using my Condor anymore. It's kindda fast ship and with the tractor thingy equiped, i guess that would be faster. But i think it would take the same time to just approach them one by one, than going back and forth to get the ship and then grab the loot ?

Eok, you could do that starting out, but as you move along in game and get bigger ships, they will move a LOT slower so that wont be an option anymore. You'd probably rather learn how to do this effectively now than struggle with learning it later on. Just my 2 isk though

If you turn the mission in first it'll remove all the large collidable structures from the area. But more importantly, if the mission was a deadspace area, it will become normal space after the mission is completed, so you can use MicroWarpDrives in it.
I personally always turn in the missions just so I can MWD around between the groups of wrecks.

BTW, what's the micro warp drive ? And do you set bookmarks to get back to your location ?

MWD Is an item like an afterburner
Right clic on a space, you can bookmark the location.

I'm always surprised by people who are shocked by this, as they don't know it.. But yeah, lots of people think everything gets better/faster as you get larger, but that's not the case. Take the caldari titan for example, its base max velocity is 60 m/s.
I'm always tryin to help people in the rookie channel understand why it's not best to jump up to large ships right away, but they don't listen, they think each time you step up it's a new pwnmobile, regardless what you have for skills.

Edited by: Dust Rocket on 12/05/2007 21:58:02 Tractor Beam needs Science 4 and it pulls 500m/s. So if ur ship is going faster then that (AB, MWD) dont bother with tractor.

I use the catalyst (Gallente) destroyer myself. I use 2 expanded cargoholds and a mark 1 ss modified fuel injector in the bottom slots. That gives me a 210m/s base speed and 419.5 m3 cargohold size. With a cold-gas arcjet thruster (Afterburner) then I am getting 379 m/s speed. Now, in the top, I have 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers. I get within 20k of a wreck, then put on the beam and then move within 20k of the next ship. I do that till I have all 4 beams working and get within 20K of the 5th wreck. Then I stop, wait for them to get within 5K then start the salvagers on each ship. They are usually salvaged withing 1.5km as normal or picking up cargo containers. Then, while I am waiting for the salvagers to do their magic, I clean up the containers floating around me. If you have alot of wrecks grouped together, this is very very quick and much better than 1 fast ship. You actually have 4 objects coming at you at 500m/s. Plus, if you are heading towards one, then you tractor it, you get 700-800 m/s with the speed of the ship and the tractor beam speed. Also, as you may know with some, the salvagers are sometimes slow, so, you have the options to throw 4 salvagers on a wreck if 1 is taking a long time

It has been mentioned, but the microwarp drive (MWD) can be a useful tool for looting wrecks quickly. As said, a MWD is much like an afterburner, but far more effective. Most afterburners roughly double your speed (100% bonus). MWD's quintuple your speed (500% bonus). So, if your base speed is about 250 m/s, a MWD will have you moving at 1,250 m/s. That could actually help you close on wrecks even faster than using a tractor beam.
A couple things to keep in mind about MWD's...
In order to use them, you must have Afterburner to level 5 and you must have Navigation to level 5. That may seem like a tall order, but many new characters start with these skills, meaning you can be using a MWD in just hours after creating a brand new character.
MWD's are great for moving fast, but they do have some penalties.
For one, you can't use them in "dead space", which many missions take place in. However, some folks have said that, if you turn in a mission, you can warp back there and the area is no longer "dead" so you can then use MWD's in that area. This may be an issue if you're running missions but, if you're just out ratting, there's really no issue.
Also, turning on a MWD makes you really fast, but it also makes you really easy to hit. An enabled MWD boosts your ship's signature radius by 500%, making you 5 times faster, but also 5 times easier to hit. As such, you may not want to actually use such a device during battle.
It's not a magic bullet to help you loot quickly, but it's just another option.

True true, but desperate times call for desperate measures. It is possible to "outrun" some rats/pirates if they scramble you and you are way outnumbered. Its worth it to chance the bigger signature and get the hell outta dodge to avoid getting podded. ----------------------------------------- Don't submit to stupid rules Be yourself and not a fool Don't accept average habits Open your heart and push the limits |

What gets me is this. the tractor has max speed of 500m/s. I lock a wreck, start tractoring it in towards my ship and head towards next pile wrecks. now my ship has speed of 350m/s. yet the wreck will not catch up more than 1500meters. it gets to 1400meters then falls back to 1500 meters. meaning I cannot loot the wreck only salvage. a loot-can does the same thing. now if my ship was sitting stationary, the tractor would pull it within 500 meters.
yeah I use destroyer 3 salvage riggs and 4x tractor 4x salvage. gives 55%(with my skills) chance per wreck of finding something. on a lvl 4 mission this puppy will clean out chambers very quickly

You can loot wrecks out to 1500m. You should be fine.

Since you are Caldari, get a cormorant (8 high slots) equip it with 4 salvagers (when you got the skills and want to salvage, if you ever want to that is) and 4 tractorbeams. Put an AB and when you can use it a MWD as well.. possibly even one cargo hold expander if you want some more space.
Use the 4 tractorbeams to pull the wrecks to you and fly around using ab or mwd like the earlier posters said.

3 small cap batteries work great in the remaining mids for the cormorant - cap stays rock solid running all salvagers and tractors, and while flying between wrecks with MWD.

Well, thanks for sharing your ways to quickly loot hehe
I like the ideas of just running the missions and go back with a MWD to loot everything around. That probably sound like the best way to do this. I could just use a Condor which has a speed of 375m/s with MWD, that would be pretty quick i think.

really you cannot loot wrecks at 1500 meters. nor can you mine out to 15km with strip miners or tractor at 20km with tractors. you can tractor at 19950meters, strip mine at 14500 meters and loot wrecks at 1450 meters. so if the loot can or wreck keeps bouncing from 1500 to 1400 it takes timing to pull the loot from wreck to your cargo hold before it bounces out of range. can be very frustrating.

That is NOT the most efficient way to loot. The [destroyer/4 salvager/4 tractor beam] method is by far more efficient. The wrecks in most missions usually end up in several clusters, which may be separated by a fair distance. And you'll often get 20-30 or more wrecks. So a MWD on a Condor with only three high slots sharing salvagers and/or tractors, will be significantly slower, since you'll be sitting waiting for the salvagers to do their work most of the time. With the destroyer, you can fly to the center of the cluster and tractor and salvage all at the same time, pulling in wrecks separated by as much as 40 km. Believe me, a destroyer really is a lot faster. Use a MWD or AB on the destroyer to get from cluster to cluster or to get to that straggler off in the distance. And if the wrecks are stretched out in a long line, tractoring/salvaging/traveling at normal speeds will be the modus operandi. Travel time is generally not the main issue when looting and salvaging most missions.

You only need AB 4 and Navigation 4 to sue them. There's also not much reason to train AB to lvl 5, as T2 ABs only require lvl 4 aswell.
