The exams are approaching. And I'm finding it reeeally hard to focus, even if failure will result in my academic career screeching to a halt and then transforming itself into a shoestore clerks' phantasy.

Soo..what are your best techniques for motivating yourself before an impending exam?
Thought patterns and stuff like that.

I've got an American Studies exam on tuesday, and that's it because I chose all the modules that are assesed by coursework! Woo!

My revision tactic is usually thus: I just read the textbook as if it were any other book, from beginning to end, usually in the space of a day and a half. In a week that's three or four times. After that, it all just sticks, and it takes up barely any of your day.

But i'm only doing my first year, my marks don't even count towards my degreee, so don't listen to me because i'm pretty blase about the whole thing.

Got 6 exams next month. The thing I find that motivates me is fear. Once I have the fear in me, I can revise all day. Without the fear, I usually end up couch-potatoing, or just half-heartedly skimming textbooks.

i majored in math(s) for this particular reason. its the only subject i know of that seems to have a built in method for studying. you do practice problems and write proofs for similar problems that will be on the test.

needless to say i don't actually study but if i did that's what i would do so there.

 1. uninstall all games (best is to have a second comp for working and give the main comp away to a friend/relatives)
1.a) remove all entertainment electronics (mp3 player, tv, etc.) from your home
 2. clean up your room/flat
 3. dont cook, eat fast food. why? because you have to wash dishes, clean up again, need to purchase more food. just go out, eat, return home. very relaxing.
 4. meet your gf only once a week for some hours. thats enough, trust me ;)
 5. get your documents sorted before you start to actually view them. nothing is more frustrating than not finding the book you need while in a learning session.

now you havent anything to do, right? stare out of the window and get bored. then you will realize that its not much difference to learn instead.

you can be in this combat mode for 4-6 weeks, ive done it several times.

 good luck!

You'll all love it when you get to uni, trust me. All my teachers tried to threaten me with lines like 'you'll get such a shock at university' and such, and when I got here... I think I had 3 x 1 hour lectures a week, and four 2000 word essays and four 2 hour exams a year.

Plus since it's in subjects you're going to actually be interested in, you'll do alot better at them. I got dismal A Levels, but i'm backhanding uni.

Of your entire academic career, high school is by far the least fun (atleast in the US). Originally by: Marquis Dean You'll all love it when you get to uni, trust me.

How to keep your mind on studying? May be too late now but go party a lot. Mix and match the vices. You'll know you did it right when you haven't slept in your own bed in days and you just wanna stay home/in your dorm and pass some tests after all is said and done.

Tons of fun now = tons of focus later

I'm doing a maths degree and this is how it seems to be:

You leave college/high school thinking you know everything.
You leave the first year knowing nothing, and you know it.
You leave the second year knowing very little, but not realising it yet.
You heave the third year knowing very little. And you know just how little it is.

I'm in my second year atm, and I can tell you IT'S BLOODY HARD!
