Edited by: Laser Wolf on 14/05/2007 21:08:54 I've seen some people intimating in other threads that they run two clients and give their mains "fire support" when running missions...do you need two accounts to do this?
Its not worth it to pay the money for a glorified uberdrone, but if I can open a second client and gang up with an alt....
edit: assuming its all legal and on the up and up with EULA and all

I think its legal but i think they (CCP) want you to run the second client from a copy of the game not from the same directory. which is nice to do anyways since you get different settings and caches for both.

The second client does not need to be in a separate directory for it to work. Just open a second instance. You will, however, need two accounts, as you cannot log in a main and an alt from the same account simultaneously.

What does it take to run two clients simultaneously like that? (I mean in terms of hardware). I was thinking about running a main and an alt on two separate accounts to take advantage of warfare links on BC's/Command Ships, but my computer seems to manage one client with varying difficulty (I'll get massive lag spikes on some missions, despite the number of people in the vicinity). Does it take top of the line hardware to pull off something like this? |

I run Eve on a 2 year old 3GHz Pentium IV with 1Gb of RAM and a decent NVidia graphics cards (also 2 years old I think it's 64Mb).
I can run 2 clients no problem and have ran up to 4 on one occassion (granted, that was an absolute hell).

Ive been running 2 separate accounts for almost 2 years - actually longer.
They both have their own folder on the games drive and it does keep interference to a minimum.
Had an AMD3800 with 1.5Gb 3200 RAM and an AGP card with 128Mb RAM - 6800 or something worked fine on a 2Meg cable broadband.
Got an Intel 6400 duo with 2Gb DDR2 6400 Ram and a 8800GTS with 640Mb Ram - cable now at 10mb and a huge 24" 1920 x 1200 screen - I window both at 1600 x 1050 and theyre bigger than a single fullscreen client on my old 19" 1280 x 1024.
Im happy - and its definitely legal. Some well known old players have up to 7 or even 13 accounts.

I use two computers for the two accounts. Easier for me to keep track and not always having to alt+tab back and forth.

I totally understand the advantage of having an additional character you can control. But doesn't it take away from the point of an MMO? ----------- We need a way to Repackage and Transport Rigged Ships. |

I have multiple accounts but I have not played missions with more than one. It requires a lot of multitasking and alt tabbing. I can do all missions with one character, no need for missioning with 2. But granted, with 2 it would be a lot faster. And yes, it can be done and it's totally legal.
I even know a guy with 10 hulk piloting accounts. He has a room full of minimum-requirement pc's just to run eve. As long as he doesn't use macro, he's legal afaik. |

I've been playing just under a month, I ran 2 trial accounts for about 7 days, then upgraded them both to full accounts. (only 1 eve can be run on a pc if its a trial account).
My mission character has good combat skills, and my support character is being trained as a miner to support me, I've also trained up salvaging/energy & shield transfer skills. It works very nicely in a gang, you just need a bit of discipline to know when to warp out etc.
I'm running it all on a 2 or 3 year old 3400Mhz AMD pc, with 2 lcd monitors. I found using 2 display was really laggy, but then discovered a mode called "Horizonal Span" in NVIDIA nView. (So my display is virtual 2560 x 1024). Running in this mode makes everything think its on one display, and it runs beautifully.

I'd started to think seriously about doing something similar, only have the one "HD" LCD display and an older CRT. I wonder if my card would implode if I tried to tell it to run in virtual mode (as you do). Does anyone else have experience trying this dual-monitor setup?

I run two accounts in "window mode" but having a large widescreen monitor helps.
I have them side by side.

Was away for a week and tried alt-tabing while running GE on a laptop... Not so good in a hairy situation I guess OK for mining. At home I run one client on a main pc and another on my laptop - 20" and 17" side by side - works fantastic.

You used to be able to run 2 characters from the same account on 2 different machines but they patched it. I asked around and the answer I got was that you were never supposed to be able to do it. As for "paying" for a second account .. it can pay for itself with the Isk -> GTC program which apparently will be converting to a system where you can not BUY isk with GTC's anymore, but will still be able to buy game time with isk.

Eve-online, Alt's game of choice. Now you wonder how many of these "Oh, we have 30 000 online" are actually "real" people and not alts.
--- Anyway, i tried with dual-acc and it works on one PC. Eve engine is not so fancy so i doesn't need a monster machine but the upcoming HighDef upgrade will probably kill the dual acc possibility.

That's still 30,000 paid for accounts that are online, right? What's the problem then? Personally, I don't get the idea of a "proper" alt - as in 2-3 different characters on the same account. Giving the length of time it takes to train anything to a somewhat acceptable level with 2-3 different alts you're going nowhere real slow. Unless they are very narrow specialising clones - like research drones. Train one up - into the virtual sweatshop, then another and another... Stinks of an exploit but I believe it is still within the EULA - does kinda kill the RP element though...

That is assuming you run them on the same machine, right? You don't have to do that you know...
