hehe you DON'T wanna get a labtop to play on... there have never been so many upcomming chases of lawsuits over labtops that cannot run games because they overheat..
its the design, they simply cannot cool down fast enough for the games... (have one myself and have to have a ventilator under it for it to run without going out every 10minutes... yer i am about to have a lawsuit with the firm zepto because they have such a bad service and they can't fix the problem and will not refound the money.. soo my advince.. don't!) ;)

My laptop only has 32MB's of video memory, but I can still eek out some EVE on it. Its not too pretty in heavily populated systems though.

AMD Turion 64 dual core 1.6GHz 128bit Radeon Mobility card 1023 RAM Xp Home Edition (urgh)
Thats mine and it runs it better then alot of desktops. Never has a heating issue, and if it is too hot in the summeri advise a 'grille' style metal shelf top with a pair of placemats for each side, gives the fan a clear venting position ;).
Thats my advice anyway :).

In Jan 2007 I bought the very cheapest Toshiba Satelite laptop I could at BestBuy - $500 US
To my surprise it played EVE just fine even before I raised the RAM from half a gig.
That machine met an unfortunate accident under the wheels of my truck - duh !
It WAS a Celeron (R) 1.60 G Hz and no special graphics accelerator - just shared RAM - with Windows XP ( they were dumping all non-Vista stuff after X-mas )
Conclusion: Anything New this summer with Windows Vista and a full Gig of RAM will rock EVE fine.
Now if only CCP could get their end going, but that's a factor of the Hardware, Software, and Too Many Users on just one shard !

PS - I replaced that Satelite M115-S1061 with another Toshiba Satelite A135-S4527 for $750 US and it is what I use now.
I'm very happy.

Running on a stock Dell Latitude D610 apart from a ram upgrade. Playing this way for over a year. Yeah it heats up and chunks away at the processor, but never to the point of starting fires or destroying the system. Graphically, meh it's ok. I was completely surprised when i first installed eve and it actually ran ok ... |

Just so I could answer your question I have just ran EVE on all 3 of my laptop which range from a very basic AMD 3000+ (1.8Ghz with 512MB RAM) to a high end dual core system with 1GB + of RAM and all of them ran it without any real problems. Needless to say the 1.8Ghz didn't handle things as well as the high end system but it did run it well enough to be able to play without having to worry about anything.
The only thing I did have a minor problem with was the SiS 760 video card which gave me scrambled text ingame until I updated the driver. Once the driver was updated the text was fine.
Personally I would rather play EVE on a desktop system which has all the top end hardware, but if your budget doesn't allow for this then using a laptop to play will or should be just fine.

We all love EVE ofcource, but even the game developers themselves have said, the game engine is getting old. After all the game celebrated its 4 years online this month, so the engine is aprox...5-6 years old? Other words you can run EVE on plenty of computers. Even some older ones.
However: EVE's engine are getting a boost. There will be coming 2 "moderenized versions" of eve: One for DX9 and one for DX10. But with "walk in station" or "Ambulation" EVE might require DX10. I dont know really, since I have it from rumours only.
In any case, buy what you can afford. And if the computer is newer then 2 years (it better be rite..?) it should run EVE nicely I think..

Got a new laptop not long ago,
AMD Turion64 2Ghz 1 Gig Ram Nvdia Go6100 (256 megs shared graphics) Vista Home Premium.
It runs eve fine, infact it looks very nice. However Vista doesnt run Eve in windowed mode very well, fine in full screen though.

Intel Pentium Dual Core @ 1.7ghz 1Gb Ram Intel Extreme 950 graphics 256mb shared Vista Home Premium
It all runs ok, a little slow which is to be expected but every now and then in whatever mode I use I get a flash of graphics garbage across the Eve window. It is literally only a flash.
Was thinking video drivers but I have updated everything. I can live with it but my old presario V6133 with Geforce 6150 graphics was much better. Oh and a snip @ ú399 :)
