My friend and I were having one of those beer fueled discussions regarding 'the good olde days'
Currently i'm designing a series of schools at work, a few in our office are actually being built in Iceland. So that the mini Oveur's 'n' Hellmar's can grow up with little heads brimming with knowledge. But what i found out while researching all the relevant information needed to have these little 9:00am-3:30pm prisons built is that kids today have it so very very easy. They can play in the swings and roundabouts without fear of losing limbs. They can accidentally run into glass doors without needing cosmetic surgery. Almost every conceivable caution has been made to ensure that the kids don't 'you know' accidentally kill themselves.
When i was a kid it seemed that almost everything was specifically designed to damaged, maim or humiliate you. It seems almost as if growing up were art of the natural selection. 'Where's Johnny?' 'He didn't make it.....the pencil cupboard got him' 'Johnny Nooooooooo'
My personal time frame for this is the 80's, but feel free to add your own stories. Much of my memories centered around how great it was but I never forgot the underlying knowledge that 'you could be next'
Were the Good Olde Days superior?

See this is what i don't understand. Noone i know lost a limb or use of an eye growing up, so why are parents so scared to let their children do ANYTHING these days? Seems like an awful lot of scaremongering if you ask me.
Fell off a swing and cut your knee? That sucks, but you wont do it more than once will you. Im left wondering, where do most of these kids learn not to fall on their face?

the schools i went to were pretty safe structurally. they had to be to contain all the violent hoodlums that were trapped in them.

The highschool I went to in Perth was a fire trap in my latter years. They built a fence around the school to keep the undesirables out and the prisoners in, but all the gates were locked during the day. I guess we all would have been screwed if there was a fire as there was barbed wire on the tops of the fences. _ Check out my blog at RantingsofaCarebear.blogspot.com Privateers: Those who don't adapt become victims of harsh irony |

It's hardly a coincidence that the permanent scars I got as a kid also brings back some of the fondest memories of my childhood. Yes, it hurt falling out of that tree onto the ground below. But I had fun doing it (well, up until then anyway) and it taught me a valuable lesson...
a valuable lesson about sure footing, that is - I got much higher on the next attempt. Ahh, those were the days... ye good olde days...

Edited by: Hypatia Iola on 15/05/2007 06:18:35 my schools had these gigantic forts made entirely out of landcsape timbers.... sharpened to points, looking aback on it today i have to say climbing on top of them and walking along the spiketips seems a bit foolish now... but if i ever post a pic you'll all see i've suffered some head trauma, i'll blame that.
edit oh and my numerous blows to the head gave me 2/3s of my standup routine so i guess it worked out

So did I, four concussions within a year I think. Funny thing is, it was always the same poor teacher who got to help me to the school nurse, dunno why but he was always around when I went down.

Another example, i have just sat down at my desk and have begun designing the ballustrading for the stairs. (The vertical bars running from the stair to the handrail) The detail that had me laughing was that, At no point should a ball larger than 100mm diameter be able to pass through the balustrading. The reason for this.....So that the little kiddies dont get there heads stuck between the railings.
I mean come on everyone knows of at least one kid who got curious and squeezed his melon between the bars. The future generations will be deprived of that particular hilarity.
The handrails have to be made from specific materials that stay at room temperature. They have to be painted a contrasting colour to there surroundings. They have specific heights, diameters, lengths. Most of these details seem like common sense but many times many have me laughing at how bubble wrapped todays youth are.
