Edited by: Damaclease on 06/01/2004 09:09:38 for all those lucky people out there with broadband there is no reason to read further unless you want to have a laaugh at unfortunate people like me.
Having work 2 jobs over the christmas period i am no free of the shackles that entails so i'm back playing eve . As my corp uses irc from time to time i normally have to miss out or sit in a station to be part of these conversations. To my pleasent suprise when i accidentily clicked undock and saw the loading space bar i was expecting my poor little dial up to shut down like it normally does, it didn't. Feeling lucky i was wondering how far i could push this new stability so also loaded up internet explorer and started browsing (before a sure fire way to cause my connection to pack in). ITs still working
There is 2 reason for this post 1st is to congratulate CCP for programming this game in such a way that a dail up user can play with very little handie cap. (Even with a restricted 28k connection!!!) The 2nd is a warning to the forum mod i'm now free to post on the forums as i play

Even though I am on broadband, I'd never laugh at 28k people, because I was on 28k 5-6 years ago myself.

Edited by: Shad on 06/01/2004 11:06:03 Hmm..and i thought it was just me that happened to :) Am on ADSL...yet if i try browsing the web/IRC etc while playing Eve....Then more often than not it kills the ADSL connection... (Dont have to reconnect-the modem just says "No signal" for few mins then comes back on) Unfortunately it still happens since Castor too :( Wanna swap ya 28k ? 28K!?
I feel for you, though. I'm on 56K and the phone lines in the house are as old as the house itself (like 60-70 years old).
Soon, one day, broadband will save me from this. --------------------

Just been in contact with BT (british telecom for the people outside the UK) and my local exchange has reached its trigger level to be upgraded. I would be happier about this if the time they expect to upgrade was less than the estimated 3 months Once again on the plus side i will be able to get a 2Mbit line

56k brought to me agression and an insane high phone bill of 600 euro's a month __________________________

When I was 11-13 years old, I played text MMORPGs on a 300bps modem. I never laugh at the dial-up dudes
(edit: that was back in the day where the 1,200bps was standard and the 2,400 was like the super godly connection speed lolol)

dont worry friend, the same has just happened to me, its being activated in my area on the 21st of January, and my Package is being enabled on the 29th, althought I did have to register a few peoples interest on their behalf to get it ;)

OMG I remember that too. Started with a 110bps modem, then bypassed the 300 and went straight for the 1200... I remember the day I bought my first 14.4k... ahhh the good ole days.

Text MMORPGS...aka MUDS.
I still play them....they can be a lot more fun than any current MMORPG. Seems like most online games are becoming the same...

I played a MUD before most of my modem play was on a 28k playing JediKnight 2, and the original HL multiplayer when broadband was for the 'elite' people who just so happened to live right next to the cable company, I've had cable internet for 5 years now, I do feel sorry for you though, I can be running 2 instances of EVE, a file sharing program, and several Internet Explorer windows, and I only lag when both EVE windows are actiavly doing something in the game, I rarely try to get both characters doing things at the same time but it is eaiser for item transfer and checking skills and such.

When I first started playing online games, I was living in the middle of nowhere with a crappy dial-up connection and was happy if I could get 2100 baud. My poor avatar was known as Scarlet, the Lag Queen.

/emotewaves to Damaclease...
Fear not, my old friend, for there are many of our brothers that are afflicted with the bane of 28.8k. Yes, I suffer from the cursed telco tactic of line splitting, my mighty 56k modem trudging at a paltry 28.8k on a good day and 26.4k most of the time. Though the gods of war have smiled on me for a majority of the time, with victory in battle. It truly is a testament to the networking background of the folks in CCP.
Alas, if only I could convince the phone company to upgrade the switch on my side of town, I too could enjoy the spoils of broadband.

Edited by: Riana Tabost on 07/01/2004 10:56:19 Is this a good time to mention that I was born on a university lan? (that is, my first internet experience was after I started uni).
100Mb from here to the local ATM switch -> 655Mb to the core network -> 40Mb link to VRN/Optus backbone (which at night time, I share with around 1000 other users).
And I'm old enough to remember the day that MP3's 'came out'.
Really IÆm demonstrating my ignorance here when it comes to modems, but I have no idea what it would be like surfing the net with a modem or playing a game. I can only assume itÆs not so great.
Still, it is fantastic that eve uses so little bandwidth :) __________________________________________________________________________ May I recommend a Cybernetic Subprocessor?.. That's an intelligence implant, sweetheart.

My connection has only stopped me doing the more risky PvP stuff. I have run all the major blockades and lived to tell the tale, even out ran mo0 when they first lived in Rorsins i still run the Fd- blockade on my frequent trips to fountain. I wonder if the lag works back the way that might be the reason i'm still alive Well today i thought i would test it even more eve + eve-radio streaming and i have to say its good the buffer on the stream covers the data peak when loading space. Thanks to all the guys at eve radio, DJ daddy good CSM relay u realy ***** me up

I use both OneTel and BT.
BT has more outages and is more expensive than OneTel (OneTel costs me ú27.99 a month, including a static IP address, BT is about ú10 more for the same package).
Personally, in my experience, I'd go with OneTel.
Hope this helps.

I'm in the uk and use Nildram, one good thing about them is that there are a few games servers run on nildram accounts, so they are good, also check out the adsl guide (www.adslguide.org.uk) for a comparision of the different adsl companies in the uk.

Thats actually quite intresting as I have road runner and every now and then you would load up eve and them BAM the cable modem would reset itsself. I found only eve would cause it do that.
Intresting to note that others have expieranced that same problem.

Hmmmm... things were better in those days, as always...
Realms of Passage was an interesting one, from what I remember, a true pvp game. The lengths one of my then flatmates went to were... insane, but fun to listen to in the pub.
His Diablo II prowess was legendary as well for a while, but that is well past the semi-golden era :)
Now I really do feel nostalgia... Nanvaent, Discworld, Elephant... hmmm...

I'm out in the EVE universe with a 2-way satellite connection. Its pretty good, the latency can sometimes get me tho. Its like "Hey, i just warped into a gate, why won't it load?" Then i load , and i see my frozen body. ----------------------------------------------- A computer is like an air-conditioner, as soon as you open Windows, it stops working.
