Just wondering what the rules reguarding character naming are in EvE? In most mmorpg's you cannot use a name that is in a copy written work. I have seen quite a few names in game and here on the forums that are from books and movies. So just wondering about the rules concerning naming.

I presume as long as it is not vulgar or causes offence then it's fine?

I believe all you have to do in Eve is restrain from possibly offensive names. If your name makes people cry and sends children into blindness, CCP will get mad.

OK, I know COH/COV had some legal trouble because folks in the game started using actual names from the comic books. So was just wondering what the policy was here. I guess since they are not in the US they do not have do abide by those rules.

Usually even if it is horribly offensive to w/e you get a chance to pick a new name that hasn't been picked already, you won't get banned for your name and very unlikely get CCP in trouble.

City of heroes got int rouble because people made exact copycats of the characters and, in some cases, claimed to be the original writers of the comics. It was to easy to make a superman, and name him superman. Eve we don't really have that problem. In any MMO you need to prepare yourself for Sephiroth. It seems after FF the movie he cloned himself and went to every game.

The rule is name you character whatever, if someone doesn't like it they will petition you and your name will be changed to something like mine.

Yeah basically name your character and go play. If its offensive there is no filter (afaik) and its up to other players to decide to petition it as being insulting or otherwise.
As far as copyright goes... meh, its been thrown out the window. People are called Darth vader, Admiral Adama, garfield, Oprah Winfrey you name it its been done so naming your characters out of books should be fine since a large portion of the playerbase has done similar.
My question is: Is it possible to name your characters the same names as npc Agents/characters in the game. I've never tested it. Have you? * * * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euZ0j7vtKEQ

Well, when i took my name, i was plenty sure there was gonna be some more sheriff's around. (wasn't back then by the way) Also the name Jones ain't that "rare". But it was general by purpose.
But, googly doesn't give out anything but real jones' in the law business, so i guess i'm copyright free

Don't take my word on it but saw somewhere it was not allowed to name yourself as a NPC character (officer rats and so). --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many

No you can't, because their name is already taken. ;) You can find them via people & places character search.

I guess you just have to trust to pot luck when it comes to what is allowed, and how it is enforced.
For example, it is apparently okay for CCP to have a ship given the name used for a Christian holy war, but not for a character to have the name used to describe an Islamic holy war.
If you were a cynic you may begin to think that it is an unfair and discriminatory policy; which of course clearly it is not.
We all know that CCP are open to all ideas and cultures (otherwise their may have been some controversy of the corporation name 4S), and that there must be a different and perfectly valid reason for a player to have to rename their character, completely unrelated to any possible religious discrimination.
Of course, this is a purely hypothetical arguement, because nothing like this would actually happen. I'm sure CCP would avoid any situation which may leave them open to accustations of bigotry. Right CCP?
I guess your best course of action would be to petition a GM to see if the name is acceptable, and if they agree that it is, keep the reply.
CCP forced me to change my name "Jih4D", so depends on there mood .

Just pick your name and stick with it. You can pick the most hideous things you can think of,even offensive stuff like beef curtains shows up on my corps killboard if it is too bad and CCP knows about it you will get renamed. for example caldari citizen ########
