Edited by: Shamza on 17/05/2007 17:58:56 I read lots of reports about fleet battles, how fun are they and how unplayable with lag issues. As I understand lag is caused by numerous objects in space interacting with each other. But the question is - do the veterans need all those ship/drone/station/etc models to participate in the fight? Battles in EVE are not about seeing a ship in space, but learning to use interface overview and clicking the right modules/icons.
So what if you make a new feature that allows to turn off ALL (or chosen manually) 3d models from space replacing them with.. simple dots or something less laggy. Due to the fact that experienced pilots need only interface overview and statictic digits, they will do their job with same efficiency but there will be much less pressure for server clusters without all those shiny textures. Though the "dots" will be visually much lesser then ships they will share the same actual size and physics.
And you dont need to keep this anti-lag feature on all the time. Just use it in the heavy traffic regions like Jita or in massive fleet battles, and turn UI back at normal space.

As much as I support this idea, that only fixes one part of the lag problem. when you have to get the location of 400 other people, their shiptypes, who has taken how much damage, how much damage you've taken, warp ins, warp outs, EWar effects, and anything else the server sends to the client, it quickly reaches the point where the server or your network connection cannot keep up.
If the bottleneck is the internet connection then the only solution would be to get a better one if possible. The server itself, however, is another matter. Because of the nature of the data it has to send, each new person receives more and more data and everyone else must receive the data for this new person. Even if CCP doubles the power of the servers, they can handle, at best, 40% more players in the same area, and more than likely not even that.
Despite this, however, I definitly support an ultra-low/elite style graphics setting for slower machines/lag laden regions. --- "Come back with your shield, or on it." |
