I was a proponent of highway removal right up until they nerfed MWD's.

Actually after about a month of going 225m/s with burners only in a Scorpion, you get right used to it.

Don't bother with burners - with 5 wars ongoing I'd rather keep myself shield tanked

I'm still of the opinion the superhighways should be removed. This game had a lot more colour to it when you could not swisch swoosch across the entire galaxy in a few jumps... it felt so much bigger!

Yes, highways smashed trading by allowing region buyers to shift their goods quicker than they appeared on the market and also by homogenising the player market. Slower speeds now mean it takes way longer to (for example) go deep into non-empire space or some forgotten corner of a region - but barely affects the places where all the trading goes on thanks to the highway routes. Before highways if you went from one region to another you really felt like you were going somewhere different - not any more though.

another option could be to put a gate tax on the highways.
Bigger ships should pay more, and there should be a tax on the cargo (possibly based on npc prices), finally some cargo should be outlaved through the highway gates, ie: slaves in minmatar, drugs etc. so smugglers would be forced to use other more dangerous routes to bring in illegal goods, or evade taxation.
even the paranoid has real enemies...

Yeh, tax the super highway (not sure how to make the taxing system practical though - and come to think of it, eve's history with tax systems isn't exactly great up till now....who said corp tax )

LOL do you guys have ANY IDEA how long AGENT MISSIONS WOULD TAKE? wow ya think about it if you had to jump some place and yes i had to use high ways to go for missions... and without them it would be HELL to do just 1 mission or so... and that 50k-100k isk value would not be worth it... and all that tech2 wouldnt be worth the super long trips to take and try to get them done in 1 time...
there are a million other things you could do to fix or improve the highways before the last one which is to remove them... think a little im sure you could come up with 1 out of the million support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

the highways don't hinder wars. Corp wars can happen in any space. you just want to be able to do more griefing.

Exactly.
YOu're going to screw agent missions.
Way too many people opening their mouths making suggestions without considering the consequences of these changes, not to mention sub cancellations or how it would affect the playstyles of others.
Then considering the new and slower traveling system, you probably need the superhighways more than ever.
Just remember the reason why CCP placed the highways in the first place. The user population is still far too small and needs to be consolidated.
If you want "mystery" back into EVE, go explore the other 0.0 regions. Superhighways made Empire Space feel "Empire"---truly cosmopolitan and civilized, a real "downtown" feel, which so often the traffic in Yulai reminds me.

heh
there not going away superhighways will be there for a very long time
0.4 gates will have guns at the gate and if tank ceo and company keeps stomping in 0.4 will get a upgrade a.k.a concord overkill(im not to much of a fan of concord) but ill be laughing when tank gets what he dont want
secure containers wont be hackable for a long time as it would prove them usless
the market will always be skrewed same as the real world{if we cant handle a market in real life what maks you think a game will be different
and last of all the rich will get richer an the poor will be left out in the cold
Bad command or filename. Go stand in the corner.

IIRC, the agent system currently isn't capable of counting the number of jumps a mission will take (too server resource intensive I believe). It is however capable of restricting missions to the same constellation and region.

LOL...
Wow, I didn't realize this topic was still ripe! I still want them removed ... lots of passion here. Drutort, remember back in the day, way back in July and August when this topic was fought about week after week? So much fun.
Anyway about agent missions, gimme a break how often do you get an agent mission from The Forge to Genesis? Personally I have never once had a mission cross-region. So please, spare me.

Hopefully if the SHs were taxed then agent missions would take that into account.
If they were utterly removed (NOT going to happen), then the agents would be giving different destinations. Agents only give missions within a certain jump range, whether it's over the SH or not.
Overall I think it's fine the way it is now. There are still plenty of long trips within empire space... ------------ Ezra Cornell pe0n, Xanadu Corporation |

Edited by: Wild Rho on 07/01/2004 05:04:59 Maybe they could rework the highways. Remove the highway links between the different empires and instead add highway links to certain areas of each Empire space.
i.e. The Amarr highway network could be linked to several important systems scattered over amarr space and so on. This would create commercial centres within each empire as there would be a high volume of traffic passing through the highways, but it also doesn't level the market because travel between empire space still takes longer.
