If I remember correctly, jump drives need a gravity signature to home on to so they can actually link the warp bubble. If so, then how are bookmarks possible?
The only way I've come up with is if every bookmark is marked by some sort of beacon that has superdense mass. The other option, I suppose, is if we've gotten so advanced that the drives can pick up on things as small as jetcans.
Thoughts?

This is the way I look at warp drives and bookmarks. The drive needs something to lock onto for normal warping so it can precisely calculate the length of the warp (the duration of the warp bubble effect). Imagine that the warp drive locks onto the distant object, then the computer uses that lock-on info to plot a precise location, then the warp drive uses the plotted location to determine the proper settings for the warp.
When using a bookmark, the lock-on stage is unnecessary because the computer already has all the data it needs about the destination end. The warp drive simply plugs in the current location along with the bookmarked location and calculates from that.

The way i see BM's from an RP point of view is they use warpable objects (Stations, stargates, planets etc) as markers. Using these fixed points the ships computer triangulates the BM's location.
Once the ships computer has triangluated the position it stores the information as a set of 3D carteasian co-ordinates with the sun as the origin of the grid. Thus giving the ability to travel there from any position.

That's really funny! You already answered your question in your question. Jumpdrives do indeed need a signature of a position. Guess why you have to fly to a spot first before you can bookmark. Seems quite clear for me. The only other way is to use a scan probe to determine this signature. And well .. you can't jump to a jetcan or a bookmark with a jumpdrive as far as I know. You still need a cynosural field for that. So maybe you just mixed up warping and jumping ?
PS: I'm not sure concerning the "gravity" in it as the whole gravity business is only part of the jump gate process. It's not like the warp drive creates a wormhole to a gravity signature. It just creates a bubble around the ship. Actually it's an anti-vacuum bubble, but still something different to a jump gate or wormhole.
And to answer your question: Bookmarks are just a set of numbers to determine a spot inside a solar system. Have a look at them when you set up one next time.
