Hello there,
I subscribed to EVE not too long ago, and I'm really enjoying the game =D
I had a question though. I made a Gallente charachter, so I was given the Hybrid Turret Skills. I was wondering in the future perhaps to be able to use some long range artillery. What kind of skills would I need for that?
Also, should a race stick to its preferred guns? That is to say, should I remain with Hybrid Turrets, rather than training something new like Autocannons, because I might not use them quite as effectively?
Thanks again for takin the time to read and hopefully help me out!

the only thing your race determines is how you look and your base attributes. You can train to maximum effectiveness in any skill line regardless of your initial race.
As for long range, large rails have a very long range, and are a very common choice of snipers. If you plan on continuing to train gallente ships, then stick with rails. -=^=-

I've been using Hybrid Blasters for the moment. Thank you for pointing out the railguns. Looking at them just now, they show a much larger range than the blasters.
So Just continue training Hybrid/Rail skills?

Gallente and Caldari ships typically get bonuses for the use of Hybrid turrets, so if you are flying Gallente/Caldari ships then you should stick to hybrids so that you get your bonus. Think of it this way: why would you want use projectiles and miss out on a 15-25% bonus to damage and a 30-50% bonus to fall-off range when flying an Incursus? Now if you where flying a Rifter you would get a 15-25% bonus to damage and a 22.5-37.5% bonus to tracking when using projectiles, so you would not want to use hybrids on that ship. If there are no bonus on your ship for guns (such as the Myrmidon) it would not matter if you used Projectile or Hybrids.

It all boils down to the ships bonus's really...
Looking at the Incursus: Special Ability: 10% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret falloff and 5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret damage per skill level.
Bonus to hybrids, so it makes sense to use hybrids on it.
There is nothing stopping you using projectiles on it, but you wont get the bonus, so you had may as well train to fly the Rifter: Special Ability: 5% bonus to Small Projectile Turret damage and 7.5% bonus to tracking per level.
which would give bonus to the projectiles.
There are some ships that dont give damage bonus to the guns, so with these you can fit any guns really.
Make sense?
Weapon type is largely dictated by the bonus that ship gives, you dont have to use it, but you had may as well, if you dont, fly a ship that gives bonus to what you are using so you are better at that thing -----------------------------------------------
No i'm not good... but i have never claimed to be -------------------- |

Long range artillery = Railguns. They have the highest base optimal range in the game, and happen to be hybrid turrets. Caldari ships tend to get optimal range bonuses for them, enhancing the range further (though the damage on the ships tends to be laughable).
