I understand that if you get equal to or less then -5.0 standing to a certain faction, they will fire at you when going through their system (in empire space). I was wondering if some1 who has that standing with a faction can tell me if it's really a big problem. I mean you probably can't dock in those area's any more, you also can't do whatever it is you normally do in empire space, so the game kinda gets 'smaller' for you.
But if you ever wan't high faction standing with one of factions there's no way to avoid it. Even when not going for faction standing but simply doing missions for the caldari navy some factions start to dislike you (Minmatar and Gallente) because some missions involve destroying Minmatar and/or Gallente ships.
Also I was wondering how well you can boost your negative standings with the social skills. I mean how high can you get with one faction while keeping the other two above -5.0?
A lot to xplain I know, it's a pain, but if you're bored, give it a go
Regards,
Zechs.

(1) Apparantly it's not that big a deal. Some ships spawn when you're -5 to a faction and enter it's space, but they're easily killed/avoided (so I've heard).
(2) Getting below -5 isn't something to worry about. I wouldn't mind to get -5 to Amarr, but even though my Minnie standing is 8 and Gallente 7, I'm still far from getting shot in Amarr space thanks to (3) the diplomacy skill. A standing as low as -8.5 can still be corrected by diplomacy 5 to get an effective standing of -4.8
As your standing gets lower, derived modifications will stop working and the only way to get it to drop is ship kills. If you avoid shooting a factions ships, you will never get too low. =AFK=

thats one of the problems I'm encountering. Quite a few missions involve killing faction ships, I refuse em as much as I can but still can't avoid killing a few minnies or gallentes.
But thanks you very much for your reply and information.

I've been *trying* to lower my caldari standings for the sake of my in-game RP, and still haven't made -5.0 quite yet.

So, if I hit -7.0 with a faction, I should easily be able to get back up over -5.0 using diplomacy? EVE math is weird
