Edited by: Vallerie Rosal on 21/05/2007 00:14:28 I'm a relatively new player, having been around for only 2 months and just popping 4mil skill points. Since I've started I have been tryin to run missions effectively and somewhere along the way I found myself putting quite a bit of effort into passive shield tanking. Now having tanked lvl4 missions in a myrmidon at this point, I wouldn't defend the passive myrm against accusations of being overpowered. Sure a nerf is coming for the passive bc pilots, I get that, and I'm not about to break out crying over it. and having been a veteran player of several MMOs I've been hit with the nerf bat like a powergaming pinata, i'll live.
In light of this upcoming nerf, I was hoping to ask the more veteran eve players as to how often does CCP swing the nerf bat? It seems to me that nerfage in EVE has a much heavier impact than it does in other games. For example, being nerfed in wow simply means paying up some measily gold to redistribute your talent points, or perhaps pick up a few new pieces of gears. In EVE however, when a previously viable play style is taken away, a player risks losing huge amounts of training time, which, justifiably, cannot be refunded and redistributed. Has there been any previous actions taken by CCP to "rebalance" eve which had caused players to be stuck with wasted training? I would be very interested in hearing what you all have to say. I had previously thought eve a breath of fresh air from other MMOs, was wondering if I have subjected myself to even more hindsight game development, only this time at even a greater expense to the gamers' efforts.

Im sitting at about 12 mil SP now, so I'm not that old of a character.
Since I started, there have been 2 nerfs that affected me, or so I thought they would. 1) ECM was nerfed, and it was a severe nerf. I trained up for ECM ships, and after the nerf- realized they are still effective in gang setups. One just needed to adapt. 2) Speed nerf. I fly intys, and was afraid to see what this nerf was going to do. But it didnt affect my inty, it affected the silly nano-phoons, etc.
Now we have the likely passive tanking nerf. Of course, I have discovered the passive tanked BC to be a wonderful ship. I dont feel its overpowered, but if that nerf does come.. I am sure I can adapt.
Yes, some of the nerfs really hurt certain playstyles. Especially if you are a creative character who has taken advantage of a loophole and used it to its fullest. If that loophole gets closed, and you are nothing more than a one-trick pony; yea its going to hurt.
Fortunately, adapting doesnt cost one months and months of training. Just build off of your characters strong points.

I think some time ago in the drone skill tree some skills were either done away with or were put together and combined into one skill, i think at that time players who had those skills were given SPs to reassign, but you'll have to ask an older player, its only a story i got second hand from a friend of mine

it also depends on what race you are, for example amarr took it so hard so long ago there children emerge from the wound nerfed and sideways, caldari on the other hand will probably survive just fine

One man's nerf is another man's fix. There are not enough people actively testing out new content on Singularity to ever be able to realize the full extent of new additions, so things get put onto the live server that were never played with in a test environment.
Do you seriously think that CCP intended the nanophoon? Maybe they did, and they just didn't realize how many people would capitalize on it.
Do you really think CCP intended Empire space to be a battle ground for war dec spamming? Probably not.
Do you think CCP intended ECM to create endless stalemate standoffs? Nope.
Most of these things, (no one saw privateers coming) and many more could easily have been prevented from ever hitting live if more people took part in testing there. That is the real problem, as I see it. Once people get ahold of something, they don't want to give it back and you can't really blame them.
So you get rabble rabble rabble by the people that feel that "X" is overpowered or out of balance. When CCP changes it, you get rabble rabble rabble about the nerfbat being swung.
It happens in every game, but I feel if more people took part in testing most of these things would never make it onto a production server, and the 'nerf-bat' would be lessened.
I think maybe if CCP kept the db's mirrored more frequently, more people might be inclined to go test out new content on that server. But then again, I think most people consider the test server a waste of time, which is sad.

They swing it rarely but always with a heavy hand. So I suggest you just get a "happy go lucky" -attitude and train for what you like, not what is the flavour of the month and have FUN! I've found it is a lot more fun... ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |

Nerf bats are for balancing. So if one ship can exploit passive items or mods to make it stronger then any other ship of its class in the game then THAT SHIP will be nerfed NOT the modules.
When it happens all depends on if CCP's actually feals it effects the game in an adverse manner into which they intended it.
Tier 3 BC's just came out so they might get nerfed but then again a T1 BC has the Tank or a BS and the DPS of a Cruiser. T2 only increased those resistances and T3 well what did everyone expect ? CCP would not increase the DPS that would just make BS's obsolete.
At any rate CCP's got to look at all the aspects and from go from there Ship nerfs tend to be slower then other things.
And mods Well considering the traing time required for passive modules on armor it is balanced if they nerf armor then they would be forced to nerf shield mods as well and I just don't see it happening. More likely certain ships might get a nerf but I wouldn't worry about it too soon.

Very nice actually. Kudos.
I have to mention though, Im not sure every nerf is thought through. You could by paper predict how stacking nerf would gimp amarr, and it took years before the devs FINALLY realised it (in public) -------------------- '\0/\0/\0/\0/\0/' Cant we all just get along?

there is no doubt that passive bc tank have to be nerfed. since its more effective then active tanking in a bs. although your dps will be really bad while doing this, its still not fair that most bs's have no chance in hell 1v1 taking your tank down (drake fully passive 553shield rec per sec, lowest resist em 25%(most ships can't even get there dps high enough, and when you get to 25% shield you effectively tank around 600-650dps.) thats not balanced. well anyway, i just hope they nerf multibel attackers at one targets dps :) ___________________________________________ Humans take everything that is beautiful and sweet and turn it into something horrifying and ugly.

On sisi Battle Cruiser shield recharge has been increased from 1250 base to 1400 (I believe those numbers are correct).
I don't think there has been an official announcement but you can bet that change (or something like it) will go live to TQ.
