What if factional warfare became used as a kind of PvP form of PvE?
I will explain briefly... Let's say two players joined two separate corporations that were affiliated with two warring factions, for now we'll call them player A and player B. They both wish to do a factional warfare mission, so they visit their respective agents.
Player A receives a mission to defend a starbase structure, no matter who attacks it. Player B receives a mission to destroy the starbase structure that Player A was ordered to defend. Once the structure or either ship is destroyed the mission is complete and the pilots receiver their appropriate rewards.
In this way it could be used as a way to facilitate PvP. For example, the missions could be situated in deadspace (i.e. a part of space that cannot be probed by pilots other than A and B but MWDs still function), they could be set within a certain timeframe (to accommodate the more casual players who can only play for 1-2hours in a day/week), they could have ship size/type/number limits relative to the agent and pilot difficulty.
Using this format players can perform missions that will force them to interact with other players in a PvP environment. The winner will receive a faction standing and agent reward for completing the objective, as well as the other player's loot and salvage, the loser will receive his insurance payout. The loot will be dictated by how much the opponents wish to take with them, since better ship modules will yield a better chance of success. Certainly these missions are more demanding, and hard to afford, but isn't that why we run level 4s and mine these days? The system seems so flexible, people could enter various teams with their faction agent, think of it as the EVE alliance championships on demand and accessible to the average player and corporation. Ideally there will be enough players willing to do these missions to allow for variety and flexibility.
Wouldn't that be great? It would stimulate a secure form of PvP, that nonetheless retained is heavy penalties and risk appeal. It would stimulate increased production and trade to meet the new demands of ship losses created by what was previously know as the PvE crowd. It would stimulate teamwork, larger teams = more fun, and this game is an MMO after all?
But...I'm just rambling. That's the reason this post isn't in the Features and Ideas section, because I'm thinking out loud in order to stimulate discussion and draw some responses to my rambling and hopefully find out what other people's thoughts and expectations are on factional warfare. I hope that I have presented my thoughts clearly enough.
Keep in mind the first two words of this post: What if? |
