Norton is actually one of the weaker AVs around these days. Norton survives because of an aggressive marketing strategy basically. All of Symantec's software is bloated and buggy.
I remember the old days when I used to use Norton Systemworks (Reg Cleaner, Defragger and other Windows tools) thinking that Norton was keeping my system afloat. It was Norton that was causing all the problems I was using it for to try and fix lol. People buy Norton because places like PC World, Amazon and other large retailers advertise it for new computer users saying it's the best. They're constantly offers deals on it to try and offload it onto the unwary public.
I used to swear by Norton. Now I just swear at it.

OMG!!! Dude, you need to format.
EDIT: I used to use Kaspersky and it came up with some false positives. It's a good AV, but be aware that some of the results you're getting may be false. Oh, and I'd seriously consider a format.
Lol, thats nothing. The other day a friend's laptop stopped working. I booted in safe mode, did a full AVG scan.........
I checked back on it the next morning, and it had thus far found 80,000 virus hits. and it was only up to "Documents and Settings". Thats the point I gave up and reformatted.
Thats what happens when you download porn without any AV software --------

The bigger problem is when you get a keylogger and it swipes your credit card details or something. If you know how to use it, AV is a god send.
Some people just expect it to be an OMGAUTOWIN and solve all their problems. Thats where disappointments come from.
My AVG has blocked countless small viruses on it's own, and given me plenty of notifications when something bigger than it can handle comes along, cueing me to fix it myself. Each to their own I guess, but I like it. --------

After using Symantec products for a long time and getting increasingly frustrated with those because of their resource use and lack of effectiveness i switched to Kaspersky internet security 6 after trying out a number of products. This one is by far the best i have used to date. I suffer a lot of attacks when using my lappy on my university's wifi net, nothing gets though - while norton allowed over half to do their harm. The student mailserver is also infested (damn universities!), never had a better spam filter. The product is also very clear on its settings and inner working, allowing the user a lot of access to what it does and does not do, varying from 'total noob - handle it all' to 'i know what i'm doing so do this my way'. Kaspersky also updates almost daily, suggesting a fast coverage of new threats. ---sig--- Yes I just won the thread. Everyone can now start bowing down to me in an orderly fashion... SIG pic |

I use to run without an anti-virus, as I tend not to be one of those tools who opens things from unknown sites or visit the warez sites with the self-executing macros. But, since its free for University students, I use McAfee.
BTW, Norton is the worst anti-virus/security program in the history of said programs. I deleted that damn thing and got back ATLEAST 20% - 30% of my resources.

I am entitled to use my work's copy of Sophos Anti Virus.
For friend's machines, BitDefender seems good enough.

The topic asks if we use AV software, and my answer is.....drumroll.....nope. nada zilch. For the last two years now I've been on Ubuntu linux. For my home server, I DO have clamAV installed to scan mail attachments so that there is no accidental passing on of something infected to my winblows friends, but it is one hassle I'm SOOOOOOOO happy not to have to screw around with on my desktop/gaming rigs.

Edited by: Camilo Cienfuegos on 01/06/2007 03:04:58 What other AV would one need except ClamAV?
I run a ClamAV mail proxy at my work and schedule ClamWin to check my home PCs during the day whilst I'm at work, and the same on the Windows machines in the office (except of course that in the office, they do the scanning at night so as not to **** of the users any more than is necessary!).
I've never discovered anything on my home machine, but you can guarantee I uncover something on at least one of the office windows machine every single night.
I've also been hunting around recently looking for other open source/free projects related to malware, and there are a few that caught my eye:
WinPooch: Seems quite nice, but be careful - if you block the wrong thing, you'll have fun getting back into your machine. Has some bloody annoying sound effects, but these can be disabled.
Spyware Terminator: Does the same job as WinPooch, and the job of AdAware and Spybot too. Slower to scan than the individual programs, but in my experience it's quicker than running both and picks up just as much.
Hijackthis: Those who use this will undoubtably love it. Essential!
SpywareBlaster: As with Hijackthis, essential - especially if running IE!
As for Norton/McAfee, I find the degredation to system performance negates any value in the software. I feel like I'm paying ú40/year to make my computer run slow!

NOD32 FTW. Resource overhead is next to unnoticeable, great scan times and the best detection of any AV.
I could probably do without AV as I know a lot about not only what not to do but about virii in general, but I am fairly paranoid about security, and when AV software is as cheap and efficient as it is (unless you use Norton or MacAfee ), there isn't that much point to not using it, especially if you run windows, which is as secure as a jetcan.

nod32, which is absolutely brilliant, plus a hardware firewall & whichever software firewall i'm enjoying most at the moment (i go through phases, comodo kerio and zonealarm are fun).
but my pc dual boots linux/xp anyway, so if i have anything really dodgy to do i normally drop back into linux for le security.
